into voting the right way, for one. And figuring out how to do the same thing to enough Republicans to win some votes, for two.

I will admit that I am wrong on this when I see Republicans voting for President Obama's policies. But it's not going to happen. Because they are not interested in cooperating, but are interested only in regaining seats. They are united in "NO". If they can stalemate everything the President tries to do, and if they can keep the media focused on what THEY want them focused on (as they usually can) then they stand a chance of turning the tide against us Democrats.

31. Bertman, Bertman, Bertman
It depends on how you define valuable time.

The Repugs made a HUGE tactical mistake by allowing the questioning and answer session be filmed. President Obama was studied and prepared for the event and the Republicans were not. The event showed the Republicans as ill prepared and child like. It also showed that they are not serious about America.

It was one day and one event but it was a very good "Democractic" day.

He also proved one more thing, he did not back down from the invitation, what do you think the response would have been if he didn't go?

That's right the right and others here would have claimed that he looked weak, he is a coward, this is not who I voted for blah, blah, blah,......you know it's true.

It was a good day!!

Oh yea would you have had the guts to go into that particular lions den and respond on your feet like he did?

6. Yes, it was a thing of beauty the way he spoke knowledgeably and authoritatively on
so many topics, especially after the Republicans had tried to make him look like he didn't know his ass from a hole in the ground.

I do agree with Duke Newcombe that it would be great to see him fight for healthcare and some other major issues as stalwartly as he defended his policies and actions.

And honestly, I think he's wasting valuable time sparring with those Republican obstructionist assholes. They have no intention of working with him and all the talking in the world isn't going to change that.

Apparently the President feels better knowing he's trying to reach out to them, but it seems to be akin to reaching out barehanded to assist hungry sharks.

Edited on Sat Jan-30-10 12:17 AM by FrenchieCat
Then he's taking action.

he's boxed the Republicans in. They are saying they want to work with him,
while their base is saying "Hell No". The "regular" folks will have something to look at,
to see if the Republicans are just full of shit and playing politics.
He's just given the Democrats mega talking points for 2010.

On the one hand you say you want him to fight and lead,
but yet when he goes into the lion's den and leaves nothing but bones,
somehow, that's not doing anything? Call me crazy, if you'd like,
but I believe this was "action".

19. The perception that you and I have is that he vanquished the Republican enemy. The right wing
and many of the Independents who are skeptical of his policies probably aren't buying into that. To them he's just dodging the issues and spinning it his way.

My belief is that the Democrats have lost support because they have tried to be bipartisan when governing for the benefit of the people demanded that they be partisan.

President Obama and the Democratic majorities in Congress were voted in by Americans who were sick and tired of Bush's approach, yet the President and Democratic leaders often seem to have a similar, though less extreme, agenda in mind. They would never say that though. Neither would the Republicans, who need to demonize the incumbents so they can get back into power.

28. Polling shows independents want bipartisanship
As un-bipartisan as we perceive the Repubs, I think a substantial number of them have bought the Repub spin. This question and answer session will remind them why they voted for Obama, show them he's doing what he campaigned on, that he's fired up and fighting for them. And most importantly he obliterated the RW distortions and lies. What I keep hearing from people studying the polling from the last three special elections, at least the ones I think are credible, is that it's the Indies that are making the difference. Some Independents are really conservatives and would never give a Dem a shot, but many are reasonable thinking people who are skeptical of politics, but can actually discern facts from bullshit. That makes this Q&A incredibly important.

30. I found it interesting during his comments that he said liberal and conservative economists
had predicted we might hit 8% unemployment in '09. Apparently they were the ones he CHOSE to listen to. I remember back right after the inauguration that Krugman, Stiglitz, Roubini, and Baker were all saying that unemployment would hit 10% if there wasn't a massive stimulus bill. All of them said that the stimulus package that was enacted was far shy of what was needed to put us into a strong recovery. I'd say current conditions back that up, so anyone who was paying attention a year ago would realize that the President was spinning hard on that issue. Of course, the Republicans would never challenge his comments because they thought the stimulus was too large as it was. That's why I say he's only convincing those who want to be convinced.

The Independents in Massachusetts were joined by significant numbers of disillusioned Democrats who voted for Brown--or who simply stayed at home. Just sayin'.

Edited on Sat Jan-30-10 11:35 PM by Skittles
this was a start - I want Obama to keep KICKING ASS - enough with trying to work with these people who are obviously, like Obama says, more interested in campaigning that working to solve problems. He's effectively called them out - in public - now he needs to KEEP DOING IT AND START GETTING REAL RESULTS.

14. I am often an Obama critic - but he was great - he scored big with this
I hope this is the way he's going to approach things going forward - take them on! The Republicans will indeed be abandoning the people (which we know they already have) if they continue to just say no - and he just made that very clear - in their face - and on national tv. When I'm Obama's critic it's because he seems to be doing the wrong thing, or not doing the right thing, but I have no complaints about how he handled this encounter. Very impressive.

34. I just watched it
Excellent. :applause:

IMO, the best part came at the end:

"That's why I say if we're going to frame these debates in ways that allow us to solve them, then we can't start off by figuring out, A, who's to blame; B, how can we make the American people afraid of the other side. And unfortunately, that's how our politics works right now. And that's how a lot of our discussion works. That's how we start off -- every time somebody speaks in Congress, the first thing they do, they stand up and all the talking points -- I see Frank Luntz up here sitting in the front. He's already polled it, and he said, you know, the way you're really going to -- I've done a focus group and the way we're going to really box in Obama on this one or make Pelosi look bad on that one -- I know, I like Frank, we've had conversations between Frank and I. But that's how we operate. It's all tactics, and it's not solving problems.

And so the question is, at what point can we have a serious conversation about Medicare and its long-term liability, or a serious question about -- a serious conversation about Social Security, or a serious conversation about budget and debt in which we're not simply trying to position ourselves politically. That's what I'm committed to doing. We won't agree all the time in getting it done, but I'm committed to doing it."

In other words, grow up, quit acting like a bunch of petty assholes, and do your job. I like it. :D
