Obama Doctors "Also Recommended "Moderation Of Alcohol Intake".
---CLIP---

His health was described as excellent and he does not have to return for another medical until 2012. Obama, who is 48, has 20-20 vision, weighs 179 llbs in his shoes and clothes, and requires little medication. Apart from the nicotine replacement, he uses a non-steroid anti-inflammatory medication associated with physical activity: he regularly plays basketball at the White House.

The doctors also recommended "moderation of alcohol intake".

The RW blogs have already picked up on this so 'hang on'...

3. Did the doctors recommend it specificallly to him?
because if the Guardian simply said that doctors recommend (to everyone) to moderate their alcohol consumption, then I don't know why The Guardian included that quote there. They better explain.

That's why he uses non sequiturs, they can't be considered proper segues to anything!

(it was probably just a reminder to keep it in check)

12. What is meant by "moderation" is different depending on what country you are in.
Betcha you'll get a marked difference between an American doctor and, say, a French or an Italian doctor. Hmmm....

14. "moderate" use of alcohol is typically approved by docs as a positive thing, not negative.
"moderate" use (one glass of wine with dinner for example) can help with cholesterol issues.

17. How soon we forget: Andrew Johnson took the oath as VP drunk.
"Almost equally memorable was the inauguration of Abraham Lincoln and Vice President Andrew Johnson in 1865. Johnson had just got through an attack of typhoid fever and, though a light drinker, he fortified himself with some brandy, chased by several slugs of whisky. When his turn came to take the oath, he stood up, weaving slightly, and made an unscheduled but extremely fiery speech ("Humble as I am, plebeian as I may be deemed, permit me in the presence of this brilliant assemblage . . ."). "Senators on the Republican side." reported the New York World, "began to hide their heads." Notables tugged at his coattails, but Johnson paid no heed. The Vice President was quite drunk."

A few drinks here and there is not a huge scandal for a President or VP.

20. That story is bullshit
The actual report is here:

http://www.whitehouse.gov/sites/default/files/rss_viewer/potus_med_exam_feb2010.pdf

The bit about "alcohol moderation" is general advice, along with getting immunizations, eating well and taking care of teeth.

22. My doc says the same thing to me even though he knows I haven't had a single
drink in 25 years. Obama's doc says he recommends moderate intake of alcohol to all patients which he defines for a male as 2 glasses of wine or one mixed drink daily and,no, you can't same up your daily allowance for the weekend.

Since the doc was quoted on the Sunday news reports, why expect anything more?

27. This article explains it all and links to Dr.'s exact "recommendations":
Moderation, please
Posted: Monday, March 01, 2010 4:20 PM by Mark Murray
Filed Under: White House, Barack Obama

From NBC's Mark Murray, Chuck Todd and Domenico Montanaro
The Drudge Report has a provocative photo and link to a story on President Obama's recent physical exam. It shows Obama drinking a beer at a basketball game with this headline: "PAPER: Obama doctors recommend 'moderation of alcohol intake'..." And it links to a Guardian newspaper account of Obama's physical, which contains this final line: "The doctors also recommended 'moderation of alcohol intake.'"

But when you read the actual report, it's clear that this alcohol recommendation is akin to your dentist telling you to floss daily and brush your teeth twice a day.

Recommendations: Follow-up colorectal cancer screening is recommended in 5 years for routine colon cancer screening. Continue smoking cessation efforts, a daily exercise program, healthy diet, moderation in alcohol intake, periodic dental care, and remain up-to-date with recommended immunizations. Continue modified exercise regimen, and lower extremity muscle strengthening program, for occasional left patella-femoral pain secondary to chronic tendonitis. Recommend dietary modification to reduce LDL cholesterol below 130.

34. So they told him to "continue alcohol moderation," eh....
This is just a grammar thing. They told him to continue smoking cessation efforts, continue his exercise program, continue a healthy diet, etc.

Thank you for showing us the entire text.

I don't drink either, but I'm always thinking about that glass of red wine a day that I hear doctors recommending.

33. That was my 1st and only thought ...i had to read a RW post to see another angle.
Never thought it could imply he had a drinking issue...I figured it was just a common thing to say as a health benefit.
I dont drink and actually avoid it because i hate the taste of alcohol but would expect a doctor to tell me to take some in moderation.
