Bwahahahah... Obama to take on Bunning
Obama to take on Bunning
Posted: March 2nd, 2010 11:40 AM ET

From CNN Senior White House Correspondent Ed Henry

(CNN) - White House aides are saying there's a "strong possibility" President Obama will take on Sen. Jim Bunning during the president's 1230 p.m. ET economic remarks at Savannah Technical College.

The president's staff has already been making political hay out of Bunning's filibuster against extending unemployment benefits.

"This is an emergency situation," White House spokesman Robert Gibbs told reporters Tuesday morning. "Hundreds of thousands have been left in the lurch....I don't know how you negotiate the irrational."

At this point, there are two possible courses of action to get around Bunning. One is to give up trying to move the temporary extenders bill through UC and file for cloture, which would mean the bill could be taken up later in the week. The other is to give up the temporary extender approach altogether and try to pass legislation with the longer term extension measures, also by filing for cloture and bringing it up later in the week. The latter approach makes the most sense to me, since it boxes in the repubs who might otherwise stall a long term measure but are going to be hard pressed to do so if it means that benefits continued to be on hold.

19. Update: never mind...
12:20 p.m. ET UPDATE: A White House official tells CNN the president and his aides decided at the last minute to drop any reference to Sen. Bunning in his economic remarks to avoid getting mixed up in the "Senate debate du jour" today.

The official said the White House wants the president's remarks to focus instead "on the employment picture in Georgia" and the nation in general, and will let Gibbs' pushback on Bunning stand on its own.

23. Do YOU?:
"We occasionally still use the old positive meaning of the word “bully” when congratulating somebody (sincerely or sarcastically) by saying “Bully for you!” A century ago “bully” meant “good,” “great.”

That’s why Theodore Roosevelt called the American presidency a “bully pulpit,” meaning that it provided him an outstanding platform from which to preach his ideas. The expression is often misused by writers who mistakenly think it has something to do with preaching at people in a bullying way."

Do you not think it would be a good idea for Obama to "preach his ideas" of extending unemployment benefits? Or do you agree with Bunning?

mention Bunning by name, not wanting to get involved in the Senate's daily business (which has been arguing back and forth). The thread is about Obama "taking Bunning on."

Yes, it would be good to preach his ideas of extending unemployment benefits, but the WH decided on not mentioning Bunning, which it seemed you wanted him to do (that you wanted him to use his platform to bring up Bunning). Of course I don't agree with Bunning.

There's a big difference between Gibbs saying something at the daily briefing and Obama saying something during a speech.

25. WTF are they so afraid of?
Bunning is retiring this year. What is the matter with Obama that he can't "gently rebuke" this prick for his anti-people policies? Bunning flipped the bird to ABC reporters, and via his grandstanding, to all working/unemployed people and BO can't call him out on this shit? Just disgusting.
