Heitkamp Won't Run for North Dakota Senate

Former North Dakota Attorney General Heidi Heitkamp (D) is ready to announce she will not run for Senate against Gov. John Hoeven (R).

Heitkamp is announcing her Senate intentions at 10:30 CT on her brother, Joel's, radio show on Fargo station KFGO. A Democratic source confirmed that Heitkamp has decided not to jump in the race.

The news was first reported by National Journal's Hotline On Call.

Heitkamp was considered the strongest possible Democratic contender to defend the seat being vacated by Sen. Byron Dorgan (D-N.D.), who surprised the political world when he announced in January he would not seek re-election. But even with Heitkamp in the race, the popular Hoeven would have been the strong favorite to win the race.
