Krugman: "I’m impressed by the passion of this guy Obama who’s campaigning for reform."

Health Care Resurrection

<...>

Betting markets don’t have any mystical power, but they do summarize conventional wisdom pretty well; and judging from Intrade, health reform has gone from a long shot to more likely than not.

If it does happen, and Republicans campaign on repeal, Democrats should say “bring ‘em on”. Those negative poll numbers partly reflect misinterpretation — a significant number of people disapprove of reform because they think it doesn’t go far enough — and partly reflect misinformation — the more people know about reform, the more they like it.

And I’m impressed by the passion of this guy Obama who’s campaigning for reform. Where was he last year?

1. Thanks for posting
it used to be that each of Krugman's blogs would be posted half a dozen times here. Now they are rarely posted.

oh, and very clever, you also used the "look in a mirror" deflection in that thread when someone called you out on the ad hominem nonsense.

16. Did you really just search the archives for that posters quotes or did you save them all this time?
Either way I find it really creepy.

20. It's creepy to search for old posts?
Maybe you should ask the mods to get rid of that function!

Sure makes life inconvenient for some people.

25. Nothing wrong with searching for old posts
I do it all the time. However, searching for old posts to play a childish gotcha games is silly and immature. You're pulling quotes from a year ago.

41. Holding someone accountable for the things they said just a year ago..
doesn't seem unreasonable to me.

I remembered NJMaverick's diatribes against Paul Krugman very vividly because his attacks went on for months on end and got pretty disturbing. He showed up in virtually any thread quoting Krugman or referencing Krugman, always with the same agenda. Several of the posts were deleted. I simply picked the first few that came up in my search and these are very mild from what I remember.

You have to admit, the quotes provide a fairly amusing juxtaposition and betray a certain level of, I don't know, shall we say... intellectual dishonesty?

5. "the more people know about reform, the more they like it"
This is so true, I think many here don't even know how much this bill will help because they only focus on one aspect and thus the blinders are up.

19. It's a little thing called "negotiating" jenmito.
The industry knows how to do it from a position of strength. You guys, OTOH, prefer to negotiate from a "Yessir Mister Senators Lieberman and Nelson! Whatever you want! May we please have another?"

The minute you signal that you'll take whatever comes out, you lose all your leverage.

21. The bill is pretty much as it's going to be, with the "fix" through reconciliation.
How can people here be against it, calling it a "giveaway to the insurance companies," and the insurance companies be against it, too?

against any bill that you really favor, as a negotiating tactic? I've never heard of that.

Does that mean that Kucinich is really in favor of the present bill?

24. Can you imagine a scenario in which the insurance
companies would actually come out actively in favor of it.? That'd be a great selling point. "Look everyone! It's such a great plan that even the Insurance Companies are in favor of it"!

29. I think they are.
It may not be everything they'd like, but it's largely to their benefit. That doesn't mean they wouldn't take more if they could get it. If the bill doesn't pass, then they've still got the status quo, which has worked pretty well for them. If the bill passes, then they've got the status quo with a new paint job, and essentially a captive clientle.

The insurance companies coming out in favor of this bill would be akin to Goldman Sachs or AIG coming out in favor of the bailout, which is precisely why they have no intention of coming out in favor of it. It would be bad PR for an already unpopular industry if they were to suddenly start cheerleading it.

30. You're missing a very important point...
the difference between the insurance companies having the "status quo" and the "status quo with a new paint job" is the 31 million new people who will be helped and won't be able to get kicked off insurance plans. That's a HUGE reason to be for it.

38. Krugman Has Offered A Very Compelling Defense of The Pending HCR Bills
...and he spot on that we can't waste this opportunity on the mere hope that some day, the road to reform will be easier. It gets harder as the Court erodes protections against corporate participation in elections.

39. It DOES get harder
and instead of using this historic window of opportunity to press for systemic reform we are keeping the status quo with regulatory reform...your own scenario makes it quite clear how easy that will be to change to placate the companies hindered by the regulation
