HCR: Not Exactly the Waterloo They Were Looking For

HCR: Not Exactly the Waterloo They Were Looking For

by Femlaw

Way back last summer, when health care reform was still navigating the tricky course of five separate Congressional committees, before the "Tea Party" broke through, before the first of a series of key Presidential speeches on healthcare, Republican Senator Jim DeMint explained what was at stake:

"If we’re able to stop Obama on this it will be his Waterloo. It will break him," he said.

Now here we are, moving toward final passage. Turns out the President is looking a lot less General Napoleon going down to defeat at Waterloo, and a lot more General Washington crossing the Delaware - rallying an army that's taken serious hits to pull itself together and successfully navigate the difficult waters of final passage.

And Democrats should not fear that journey. Because passing health reform is a Waterloo all right - for the GOP. It is a devastating blow against the nearly three decades long Republican campaign to define government as the enemy. That's why the Republicans are doing everything they can to stop it.

3. If all the opponents of this HCR legislation were so confident that it would hurt Obama, especially
the GOP, then why don't they let it pass and campaign against it and him?

Could it be that they secretly think it will be a success and they themselves, not Obama, will be the ones taking the political hit when it succeeds and their NO votes are shown to the world?

I personally think it's a Frank Luntz wordsmithing job...put that phrase in the voters mind.

I think they're scared and I love it.

4. Asshole republicons and others
who want the President to fail even if it means hurting People's Health Care bc they can't have a Democratic Victory at any cost.

6. Obviously they would rather it did not pass then it passed. They can't campaign on Dems not being
able to govern then.

7. We don't have enough votes in the senate yet. The house is shaky with that Stupak and some
others who will not vote for it unless there is a public option.

9. It ain't over till it's over
and it ain't over.

Nancy Pelosi's comments notwithstanding, we have not yet had a vote on the Senate bill. Even if that passes, we still don't know what's going to be in a reconciliation bill, and if either the House or the Senate will vote for it, as it finally emerges, Repuke amendments and all.

The Waterloo might just be what happens in November. While it would not directly affect President Obama's job, it just might dictate what the composition of the Congress he gets to work with will be.

11. I agree
If the republican RW sincerely believed that passing healthcare would destroy the Democratic party leading them to win the Congress in 2010, they would not be so agitated - coming up with more new reasons why passing it is unfair than Massa has for why he quit. The strangest two are that "America" voted against it when they (sic) elected Brown as the 41st Senator and the idea that the current Congress is not representative because opinion has shifted.

12. I WISH the President would summon what little snark he has....
... and sign the thing in Waterloo, IA.

Oh how wonderful that would be.
