Edited on Wed Mar-10-10 08:19 PM by Writer
I'm doing this...

And this...

And this...

Because, truly, it will be the first time in a long time that the government will have passed a bill that is for the good of ALL of America! And that's reason to celebrate!

37. You don't understand very well.
CBO projection was that about 15 million additional people would be insured by private insurance, whether for-profit or not-for-profit. Since every exchange would have to include a not-for-profit plan, it is very possible that for-pofit companies would pick up less than 10 million people. Overall the increase in people with private insurance would be less than 10% of the 160 million who currently have such coverage. Currently combined profits for health insurance companies run about $25 billion annually. Consider this please, from Section 10905 of the Senate bill:

Sec. 10905. Health insurance provider fee. Removes third party administration agreement fees from the allocation of the fee to health insurance providers. Eliminates the fee for 2010. Establishes the annual fee at $2 billion for 2011, $4 billion for 2012, $7 billion for 2013, $9 billion for years 2014 through 2016 and $10 billion for years after 2016. Creates a limited exemption from the fee for certain non-profit insurers with a medical loss ratio (MLR) of 90 percent or more in the individual, small group and large group markets and whose overall MLR is at least 92 percent.

http://dpc.senate.gov/healthreformbill/healthbill49.pdf
here is rather obviously no way that the additional profits from a 10% increase in number of insured will come anywhere close to covering that $9 billion fee. It is pretty obvious to me why insurers are spending hundreds of billions to stop reform, but then I've never been into wearing tinfoil.

48. Sounds good on paper, but who's going to enforce it?
Laws are only as good as the budgeting of it's enforcement and the will of those tasked with doing the enforcing. Would you trust the SEC or the Fed to enforce these laws. A few strategically greased palms could render this thing toothless, especially when the palms belong to bureaucratic hold outs from the Bush administration. Some of them might just look the other way in the way the SEC looked the other way while Goldman Sachs and AIG and Bernie Madoff robbed people blind and with the exception of Madoff, got off scot-free and even received fat bonuses.

As for any of this reform, I have no doubt it'll pass. I also know that once it passes, the so-called moderates will be clamoring to "move forward" and put any fix to the HIR on the backburner forever.
The insurance industry will be forever subsidized with our tax dollars and we'll be stuck with policies that don't cover jack-shit. The system will never change when you embrace those that cause the problem.

41. Insurance on the exchange will have a limit on out-of-pocket costs, unlike Medicare.
Copays and deductibles will be similar to those of large group insurance plans. The whole idea is to make large group insurance available to everyone. Paranoid fantasies about huge deductibles are usually spread by people who don't know the difference between a deductible and an out-of-pocket max. A policy with 70% actuarial value cannot have a deductible of over about $2500, mathematically, for an individual. Since preventive care would be provided without out-of-pocket cost, most people would not even go through the deductible in most years.

21. Let's get it done!
Well, I share your sentiment but first we have to get it passed. The Whip Count provided on www.thehill.com is incredibly close. Besides losing Wexler's and Murtha's votes, it appears that Arcuri of New York is now a "No" vote (what's up with that??) That takes our vote total down to 216, and there are a lot of centrist Democrats who voted yes in November who are now facing tough races this year (thanks to the momentum the Republicans have gained in recent months (especially after getting Scott "Centerfold" Brown elected to Ted Kennedy's old seat). This is nowhere close to being a done deal.

24. Me too. My COBRA extension ends this August. And, I self-mandate carrying insurance.
Even if it's costly and crappy, I will not subject my fellow citizens to the cost of my medical care indirectly by being negligent.

Those who cannot afford it should be provided it.

Those who can scarcely afford it should have assistance.

And for all who must pay for it, there must be a non-profit provider, a public option or buy-in to Medicare.

I will dance with you, Writer, if Mr. Writer doesn't mind.
