"Tom Hanks stops by White House briefing room."

Actor Tom Hanks made a surprise visit to the White House briefing room Thursday night to visit the "poor slobs of the fourth estate" – and his coffee machine.

Hanks, accompanied by director Steven Spielberg, wanted to check out the $1,000 Pony Espresso machine that he gave the press corps during the Bush administration. They had just finished screening HBO's new series "The Pacific" with President Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama.

"How's this holding up? Do you need another one?" he asked. "Do you use the pods or loose coffee?"

Hanks, wearing thick black glasses and a suit, fiddled with the settings and told the assembled crowd, "Because I never served in our military, I'm going to get you another espresso machine."

But then he opened it to take a look. "You know you are supposed to clean this after every use," he said.
