Flirting with Birtherism

Marc Ambinder notes there are now five major Republican Senate candidates who have at least initially refused to answer whether they believe President Obama is actually an American citizen.

"Several of these candidates have later corrected their initial hesitation, but it is precisely that initial hesitation that contains so much information about what Republican candidates fear right now. No doubt that Portman and Marco Rubio know that Birtherism is bullshit. The gap between their private beliefs and how they articulate them publicly is fairly wide. I'm not a fan of stories that begin with X 'refuses to denounce' Y -- I usually skip them. I make an exception here because the accusation is so reckless, so tied to race and culture, and so stupid that those who try to Wink at the Birthers are adding potency to a poison that everyone is forced to gulp."

1. Birthers, those who support birthers and those who
hesitate about "birtherism" are idiots. Even if Obama was not born in this country it would not be a "constitutional crisis." These people know damn well he was indeed born in Hawaii. They just want something to bitch and whine about. I am sick of hearing about these lamebrain nitwits who have about as much intelligence as a head of lettuce.

3. Eh, the stupid rule that you can't be President if you were not born here needs to be changed anyway
Not that Obama wasn't born here. But in 20, 40 years, there will be a lot of kids growing up who were NOT born here. American society is changing. I think it is enough that if people want to be here, they are "Patriotic" enough to be President. I mean, make me care about something that actually matters.

6. I disagree. I think the President should be born here.
I don't care where his/her parents are from, but for this most important job in America, I want an American born. The stipulation in the Constitution is there for a good reason and I believe in it.

That being said, since Obama WAS born in the US, these birthers are just a bunch of sad racist grasping at any straw to make their worst nightmare go away.

7. I have to wonder how many "voices" in their heads...
these people listen to.

The same mentality that brought humanity, "She's a witch!", consumes these people. The whole "birther" issue is just so damn stupid, it occasionally makes me ashamed to call these people an aspect of humanity.

8. Birtherism is one of those issues that have the republicans backed into a corner with their base;
if they deny that they are birthers, they lose favor with their base. So as the elections get closer, I think we will see most of them become strong birthers.
