Senate Abortion Restrictions Are Sufficient, Catholic Group Says (NYT)
Senate Abortion Restrictions Are Sufficient, Catholic Group Says
By DAVID M. HERSZENHORN

According to the National Catholic Reporter, Catholics in Alliance for the Common Good, a Washington-based advocacy group, sent a letter to members of Congress on Friday urging support for the Senate-passed health care bill and expressing its view that the bill contains sufficient provisions to prevent the use of federal money to pay for insurance coverage of abortions.

The story caught the attention of the White House, which sought to publicize it on Friday evening.

Representative Bart Stupak, Democrat of Michigan and a leader of the House pro-life caucus, has insisted that the Senate bill does not impose sufficient restrictions on insurance coverage for abortions. But other Democrats disagree. The Senate language was negotiated by Senator Ben Nelson, Democrat of Nebraska, and Senator Bob Casey, Democrat of Pennsylvania, who both oppose abortion rights, and Senator Barbara Boxer, Democrat of California, who is favors abortion rights.

Congressional leaders are trying to make a case that if the compromise was sufficient for Mr. Nelson and Mr. Casey, it should be sufficient for others. Mr. Nelson voted in favor of the Senate bill, but he has since said that he preferred the restrictions that Mr. Stupak succeeded in including in the House-passed health care bill in November.

On Friday, House Democratic leaders said they were not negotiating with Mr. Stupak on any further changes.

3. Not to interrupt such a well-reasoned post, but you're confusing this group with the hierarchy.

6. I assume you're referring to this:
"Catholics in Alliance believes in the sanctity of all human life—from conception until natural death. Our Catholic faith and the Catholic social tradition affirm that all life is sacred, and that every person has essential worth and dignity. Therefore, we support a consistent culture of life that includes protections for unborn children; implementation of social, economic and material supports for pregnant women and vulnerable families; and protections for children from abuse, poverty, and neglect. We believe that as a society, we must care for all life—whether unborn or born, guilty or innocent, young or old. We work to promote the essential conditions for a culture of life that upholds the sacred and inviolable dignity of the human person against affronts to human life at all stages."

Misogynist is rather narrow view of that statement.

10. I don't think so, considering their stance on that and contraception...
they, just like the rest of the church believes women should not be able to make their own reproductive choices, which is, to put it simply an egregious stance to have.

Hell, I was raised Catholic, and my Catholic Mother had to violate the church's stance on these issues just to stay healthy and alive, frankly, the Church can go to hell on this and many other issues.

4. I hear ya...
Normally, I wouldn't care either. But it only goes to show how messed up Stupak is. And it gives cover to other anti-choice Dems to do the right thing.

9. America Magazine made this point as well
They are a Jesuit publication. They basically said Stupak is wrong and that the bill should pass.

8. From what I've been able to find
this is not a mainstream Catholic group. It does not seem representative of what the majority of Catholics think about this issue.
