Premium caps
Edited on Mon Mar-15-10 01:31 PM by ProSense

Go here and play around with individual premiums.

more

Also note that this is in the individual market, not employer based, where this will apply (edited to add the full list of caveats)

  • Specific subsidies for cost sharing and what people might pay out-of-pocket for deductibles and coinsurance are not illustrated on the calculator.

  • In many cases coverage will be more comprehensive and accessible than what is typically available today in the non-group market, so premiums cannot easily be compared to what people buying insurance on their own are now paying.

  • The calculator does not apply to people with coverage available through an employer, where the firm is generally paying for a substantial portion of the insurance premium.

    1. still this is just a bad solution
this is NOT the best solution we could have put forth. It's a solution, and it's one that requires "subsidies" instead of exemptions.

I'm not saying we shouldn't pursue a solution or throw out the only one in front of us, but if this is as good as it's allowed to get, then color me disappointed.

Access to public healthcare should be one of our fundamental American "rights", just like access to guns.

    7. And by "hiding" the cost of private health care with subsidies, it could definitely pacify the...
people's urge for comprehensive, egalitarian reform.

Just because a subsidy is paying for health care, it doesn't reduce the per capita costs (and I realize there are some other experimental measures, but no silver bullet). The costs get passed around in a shell game, but its still going to be there, and its still going to be strangling the competitiveness of America's businesses.

People might think if its not coming out of their immediate pocket, then its not a big deal. But if its affecting their pay (or their ability to find a job) and their tax rate, then clearly its not a solution that is going to be any sort of panacea and promote social mobility.

By swallowing this bitter pill now, there may not be another to swallow for a long time yet.

    5. This calculator doesn't tell you anything
other than if you're a single adult or a family of four. What about if you're a couple with grown kids? I'd like to be able to see that number.
