AP: Catholic Nuns Urge Passage of Obama's Health Bill
Catholic nuns urge passage of Obama's health bill

By RICARDO ALONSO-ZALDIVAR (AP) – 6 hours ago

WASHINGTON — Catholic nuns are urging Congress to pass President Barack Obama's health care plan, in an unusual public break with bishops who say it would subsidize abortion.

Some 60 leaders of religious orders representing 59,000 Catholic nuns Wednesday sent lawmakers a letter urging them to pass the Senate health care bill. It contains restrictions on abortion funding that the bishops say don't go far enough.

The letter says that "despite false claims to the contrary, the Senate bill will not provide taxpayer funding for elective abortions." The letter says the legislation also will help support pregnant women and "this is the real pro-life stance."

3. As much as I welcome endorsement from any group, I give it the same import as if the nuns
ask the same lawmakers to abolish abortion. The legislators should vote the wishes of their constituency, not their faith or respect for faith.

6. It's me. I've got no use for magic thinking nuns
And I really don't think they carry any clout around SE Wisconsin.

If they satisfy some psychic need for you, then great.

5. May all who praise the nuns here
hold equal respect for them when the griping starts about the conscience clauses in the legislation.

9. Good
I like that the nuns publicly broke with the bishops over this. Lots of discord in the Catholic Church these days, especially with the child sex torture apologist Ratnazi at the helm.

Give the nuns their due. They do the ground work with the sick and poor, and it only figures that the men would draw a hard line (and an intellectually dishonest one) concerning abortion.

14. As a recovering catholic I can say that nuns are the best,
most caring part of the church, so yeah this is nice. It's especially nice seeing them go against the bishop's group and the abortion funding bs.
