Boxer Brings Out The Big Gun

By CQ-Roll Call Staff | March 18, 2010 9:49 AM

Three-term Sen. Barbara Boxer is getting help of the highest level as the Democrat starts what could be a tough re-election campaign.

President Obama will travel to California next month to headline a joint fundraising event for Boxer's campaign and the Democratic National Committee.

Boxer is running roughly even with her potential Republican challengers, according to the latest Field Poll, which tested Boxer against three GOP candidates.

The results:

Against Tom Campbell, it was Campbell 44 percent, Boxer 43 percent.

Against Carly Fiorina, it was Boxer 45 percent, Fiorina 44 percent.

Against Chuck DeVore, it was Boxer 45 percent, DeVore 41 percent.

Margin of error: 3.7 points

CQ Politics currently rates the race Likely Democratic. Check back to see whether that changes. And you can follow all the 2010 Senate races with our election map.

1. Ugh...it's bad enough we keep electing Republican Governors
I'm going to throw up if we elect a Republican Senator.

4. Fiorina slightly ahead of Boxer, how stupid are we in California? Not only did she almost ruin HP
but she is one of the most anti-labor people around

I am glad that Obama will be campaigning for her, but the DNC better pull out all stops

7. Thanks, I read it wrong, but nevertheless, Boxer should be polling much better than that
against her

It looks like I will be getting more involved in Boxer's campaign

5. Here are the polls since January on Real Clear Politics of Boxer vs Campbell
http://www.realclearpolitics.com/epolls/2010/senate/ca/california_senate_boxer_vs_campbell-1160.html

RCP Average 1/12 - 3/15 44.5 Boxer 42.3 Campbell Boxer +2.2 spread

The Rasmussen poll was done on 3/11 and she was ahead 2%. The Field poll done 3/9 to 3/15 shows that Campbell is ahead by a point (wonder what the margin of error is on that one). It is going to be a close one.

8. We can't lose Barbara Boxer
She's one of the best. I'd better find some money somewhere to send to her.

9. She always runs hard
The good thing about Boxer is that she won't be slacking off, so that gives her more of an edge. In the long run, I think she win by a safe margin.

10. Obama best whip them up good and proper
California has the most demoralized and apathetic Democratic Party in the nation. They are so sure they are Blue to the Core that they sit on their hands and elect one Republican after another, pass anti equality laws, the works. No matter how many elections go south, CA Democrats are sure the next one is an instant, effortless win. Or, a loss no matter what. They are already giving up in the face of Meg Whitman, who is one of the worst candidates for anything, ever, but CA Dems have folded already, because Meg's rich, and to CA, rich is the same as being divinely anointed.
I hope to hell the Democrats in my homes state wake up and do the work they need to do. It is work. It is hard. There is lots of it. Please, please do it.
Thanks.
