Bipartisan immigration reform framework announced
Bipartisan immigration reform framework announced
March 18, 2010 | 2:29 pm

Sen. Charles E. Schumer (D-N.Y.) and Sen. Lindsey O. Graham (R-S.C.) have laid out the framework for a comprehensive, bipartisan immigration reform bill that would include tougher border enforcement, creation of biometric Social Security cards and a path to legalization for the nation's estimated 11 million undocumented immigrants.

The announcement of the plan, which brought immediate praise from President Obama, comes days before a pro-immigration march scheduled for the nation’s capital on Sunday.

”It thoughtfully addresses the need to shore up our borders, and demands accountability from both workers who are here illegally and employers who game the system,” Obama said in a prepared statement.

“A critical next step will be to translate their framework into a legislative proposal, and for Congress to act at the earliest possible opportunity.”

The plan includes four basic pillars, including the creation of biometric Social Security cards to ensure illegal workers cannot get jobs in the future; fulfilling and strengthening border security and interior enforcement; creating a process for admitting temporary workers; and implementing a tough but fair path to legalization for those already here.

6. Actually, it's the "guest worker program" that's the real problem
An endless and permanent stream of poor, malleable, and politically neutered workers for Big Bidness to exploit.

7. That could be a problem too

We all know that the chamber of commerce and big biz hates the HCR bill but when this bill is debated, I can bet that they'll endorse it 1000000%.

2. Rush, Glenn and Lou are getting their "amnesty bill" and "illegals" sound bites all lined up.
Let the demagoging begin!

The AFL-CIO and Change to Win as well as the Progressive Caucus support this so let's hope the republicans don't defeat it again. Hopefully they will be on the run after HRC wins.

4. The AFL-CIO has not taken a position on this bill.
This bill is different from those in the past.

5. My bad. I know they had backed Obama's framework for immigration reform and this sounded
like it was consistent with that framework. Does it differ from Obama's framework in some way that might cause the AFL-CIO to back away from it?

8. I think it will all depend on the exact language of the bill
Namely the section on temporary workers. I think that will be the hardest for people to unite around.

9. Yep. Only the nativist bigots will be upset about amnesty.
But the guest worker piece will piss a lot of people off, and rightfully so.
