How long is the shelf life?
I remember on the West Wing the Secretary of Defense (at least I think that's who it was) constantly brought up President Bartlett's inexperience during his first term. Finally one day early in Bartlett's second term, the Secretary started harping on how "this president has never led an army", which then prompted Leo McGarry (the Chief of Staff) to say tersely, "he's led one for four and a half years now".

And Leo's comeback is just stellar, but of course so was his character. RIP John Spencer.
Couldn't find the episode number, but here is my favorite quote:
"This guy's walking down the street when he falls in a hole. The walls are so steep he can't get out. A doctor passes by and the guy shouts up, 'Hey you. Can you help me out?' The doctor writes a prescription, throws it down in the hole and moves on. Then a priest comes along and the guy shouts up, 'Father, I'm down in this hole can you help me out?' The priest writes out a prayer, throws it down in the hole and moves on. Then a friend walks by, 'Hey, Joe, it's me can you help me out?' And the friend jumps in the hole. Our guy says, 'Are you stupid? Now we're both down here.' The friend says, 'Yeah, but I've been down here before and I know the way out.' "

I didn't like her because she is a Repub and seemed unqualified for the position of VPOTUS but that remark really (and unnecessarily) shat all over people who do good (and important) work for communities all over the country (indeed, the world). We've always known, of course, that the Republican Party really doesn't care about people and groups like ACORN but it was sickening to hear it expressed so forcefully (and proudly) at their national convention. With rhetoric like that and friends like the teabaggers, I'm amazed that they're actually surprised that their party isn't able to attract many minorities- and why their long-term prospects for political power ultimately seem quite bleak (not that I'm complaining mind you ;-)).

IMO your assessment is right-on.
When Palin was on stage delivering her permafrost snark, the convention delegates were stomping their feet and hooting with pleasure. That was pretty scary, too. When the line blurs between 'Republican delegate' and 'secessionist kook,' the GOP is in trouble.
And I'll join you in not complaining about that! :hi:

43. I will never forget - |
|
it was the feeling like you just had someone puke all over you. We came off the headiness and inspired high-mindedness of Obama's nomination, to be brought low into the manure pile, with her puking all over the beautiful, genuine values expressed in Obama's candidacy - esp. the shots of generations-old African-American men and women, and others who've worked for civil rights and human dignity, and yes, Glen Beck, social justice, all their years - with tears streaming down their faces, to her brand of snark. It was a "hair standing up on the back of my neck" moment for me, that I get when I'm in intuited danger; my reptilian brain kicks in to let me know I'm in a fight for my survival in that moment! It was very visceral for me, and terrifying!

:eyes:
and which policies has she gotten through? She never even finished her FIRST term in the governor's office in Alaska! She needs to stop offering her opinions on things that she has no experience with herself- which, unfortunately, we know she won't do but still.............:eyes:
She obviously must've been too busy promoting herself (yes, that's exactly what she's been doing since the last election and why she ultimately quit as governor IMHO) to notice the things Obama has seen through (and about to see through) but, then again, she, like all Repubs, isn't part of the reality-based community, so facts don't matter to her.

37. Seems like each of these freeper thugs, including Palin and Tea Partiers |
|
are handling their defeat in different ways, but the result is the same. Each understands in their heart that they haven't just lost this battle, which happens to be about health care reform.
They have lost the entire war. It is over for them, and thus their ugly side is spewing ugly comments in the face of their imminent demise as a political force for the foreseeable future. I mean, look at Palin's comment - it is without a basis in reality. We are on the eve of passing the first step in a program to completely change how we deliver health care to our citizens. Something that others have tried and consistently failed at doing over the last so many decades.
And this is the moment when she chooses to say that Obama is the one who doesn't have the experience to get policy through? That is beyond stupid, it is completely false even with the truth right in front of her face.
I am in my 50s. I haven't heard people chant "N" at black congressman or anyone black like this since the 1960s - and they want me to believe that their cause is strictly about encroaching communism? Please.
What they realize, as do I, is that once health care reform passes, I won't see another republican in higher office for the rest of my days. It will take awhile to sort out and build momentum, but republicans will remain a relic from the dark past for decades and decades. That is good thing. And it is why they are acting so stupidly and feeling so threatened.

in terms of momentum building for a big change in societal order than I thought I'd see in my lifetime. It took me a long while to recognize what this means. It will be slow, but we headed in a new direction. You know, when I was young, the nasty things that today's repubs are saying from the sidelines were not only being said from positions of power, they were institutionalized in our laws and enforced also by societal pressure. Back when I was young, people with these kinds of attitudes called the shots - they ruled the world in which I grew up in and lived as a young adult.
And today? These people are so marginalized at this moment that all they can do is take potshots from their spectator seats. And that is what I've been waiting to see as a partial confirmation of where we are headed. Because nothing is certain other than change, I warn myself daily that we might swing back at some point in the future (or god forbid, some extremely unexpected outside influence/event could derail or postpone our progress in this regard). But I am now cautiously optimistic that it won't be for a very, very long time. While it will take time to cement this, and realize just how momentuous this moment is by virtue of seeing it solidify into real action which takes us in a different direction for our future, I have finally exhaled:)
