Was "deem and pass" a decoy? |
|
After thinking about this for a bit, does anybody think that this was thrown out there to placate some Dems and throw Repubs into a tizzy; or was the ridiculous overreaction by the press to the hypocritical complaints of the Republicans underestimated?

1. I thought of that too..The Dems |
|
who are working to get this accomplished know exactly what they're up against and I wouldn't doubt that they've had all kinds of strategy goin' on. Don't know if we'll ever know exactly what all..

2. 'Deem And Pass', Sir, was a Measure Of How Little Trust There Is In the Senate |
|
Edited on Sun Mar-21-10 12:41 AM by The Magistrate
It was an attempt to be certain there was not an instant when the Senate bill stood passed by both the House and Senate in its original form, lest the matter freeze at that point, and the Senate bill simply become law.
Reid produced written pledges from fifty-one Democratic Senators to vote for the House revisions in reconciliation, and Speaker Pelosi decided to believe him.

4. Are you saying that it wasn't until Reid produced these pledges that Pelosi decided on 2 votes? |
|
Hmmm, I guess I was not aware of this 'deal' - did the insane reaction of the Republipress push Pelosi/Reid to 'get it done' WRT the pledges?

8. That Is My Impression Of The Sequence, Sir |
|
Edited on Sun Mar-21-10 12:58 AM by The Magistrate
No claim to inside knowledge is made, of course.
My guess is the Republican reaction had little if any effect. It is purely an internal matter. At this point, House Democrats view Senate Democrats as the enemy, equally with Republicans. Literally hundreds of bills have been sent up to the Senate by the House, that have not even had the dignity of being filibustered by the Republicans; they have seen no action whatever. People who voted for them, who wrote them, are angry.

Thanks for that. It is also true that the net effect is that many of us forgot about the ongoing distrust between the House and Senate due to the 'noise' generated by the media.

5. Maybe...I think Dems were tossing it out there to see how the MSM and Repubs would react but |
|
were still intending to go through the normal vote process. I think they may have thought about the "DEMON PASS, SLAUGHTER RULE" (as the media says it) but then with all the anger and realization it would be a talking point in Nov they scrapped thoughts of the idea -- the MSM made it easier for them to decide.

If so, it was a great tactic as it drove the right bonkers, screaming that it was unconstitutional and never been done before - not to mention unfair, unAmerican and against God. Meanwhile, they did not attack other things.

ahead of the Repugs. When Deem & Pass came up - they had some of the Repugs calling for a straight 'up or down' vote. Others - like someone else said - they were saying it was 'unconstitutional'. Well they flushed them all out of the woodwork. They made them say things that they shouldn't have said - and now - we're giving them a 'straight up or down' vote. Ingenious!!!!!

And I am going to rub my pub friends noses in it. "While you were getting a hard on for Bret Bair and bitching about Deem and Pass, the President told everyone to focus on the substance not procedures. Next time maybe your guys will focus on substance and not follow the shiny new object."

18. Some people claim that if Repubs were doing certain things "we'd be outraged" |
|
Edited on Sun Mar-21-10 09:18 AM by ProSense
Well, if the Repubs had done this, those same people would have been saying the Dems got played.
Notice throughout the deem and pass media hype and Repub outrage that Democrats were still pursuing votes.
One thing is certain: Pelosi didn't put all her eggs in one basket.
