19. "The Cause of My Life" by Edward M Kennedy.. |
|
<snip> "In 1964, I was flying with several companions to the Massachusetts Democratic Convention when our small plane crashed and burned short of the runway. My friend and colleague in the Senate, Birch Bayh, risked his life to pull me from the wreckage. Our pilot, Edwin Zimny, and my administrative assistant, Ed Moss, didn't survive. With crushed vertebrae, broken ribs, and a collapsed lung, I spent months in New England Baptist Hospital in Boston. To prevent paralysis, I was strapped into a special bed that immobilizes a patient between two canvas slings. Nurses would regularly turn me over so my lungs didn't fill with fluid. I knew the care was expensive, but I didn't have to worry about that. I needed the care and I got it.
Now I face another medical challenge. Last year, I was diagnosed with a malignant brain tumor. Surgeons at Duke University Medical Center removed part of the tumor, and I had proton-beam radiation at Massachusetts General Hospital. I've undergone many rounds of chemotherapy and continue to receive treatment. Again, I have enjoyed the best medical care money (and a good insurance policy) can buy.
But quality care shouldn't depend on your financial resources, or the type of job you have, or the medical condition you face. Every American should be able to get the same treatment that U.S. senators are entitled to."<more> http://www.newsweek.com/id/207406

25. "But we in it shall be remember'd; we few, we happy few, we band of brothers!" |
|
If I may repeat myself..... This story shall the good man teach his son; And Crispin Crispian shall ne'er go by, From this day to the ending of the world, But we in it shall be remember'd; We few, we happy few, we band of brothers; For he to-day that sheds his blood with me Shall be my brother; be he ne'er so vile, This day shall gentle his condition: And gentlemen in England now a-bed Shall think themselves accursed they were not here, And hold their manhoods cheap whiles any speaks That fought with us upon Saint Crispin's day. 38. Who is now spinning in his grave |
|
this bill is very close to the one Gingrich proposed during Clinton's attempt at real HCR-that Ted Kennedy rejected. Now it will be the law of the land. It's a sad day for Kennedy's memory, and for Americans who need REAL health care reform!

87. Ted Kennedy wrote major portions of the bill |
|
And if you look at the history of the 1993 health care debate, anything that came out of the Republicans' mouth at one point or another was not genuine. Bob Dole, then Senate Minority Leader, first came out saying he favored an employer mandate (the mechanism Clinton planned to use to achieve universal coverage) but then once the process started he changed his position. The idea was to lure Clinton into a false sense of security.

for Teddy.
This is just window dressing. Millions of Americans will continue to sit at the back of the bus and either will not be eligible for this program or will still not be able to afford it.
More much more should have been done for the American people. The Democrats and the leadership for top to bottom bungled the process from the get go.
No cigar.

It had to start somewhere and this was a huge leap towards universal health care. Why rain on the parade? No one thinks this is a perfect bill. I'm sure Teddy would be thrilled with the outcome, knowing that our representatives will make good changes in the future.

As for why I'm raining on the parade, it's because it's only by letting our representatives know you're unhappy when they've done something wrong that there's even the slightest chance of them ever doing something right. If not for me and the others like me, these "changes" you imagine would have even less chance of happening then they would otherwise.
Do you congratulate your dog when he shits in the hallway instead of the bedroom, just because he got closer to door?

He was my Senator, and I was proud of him and the work that he did. Teddy would have supported this bill, even though it doesn't go as far as he would have wanted, because he knew that you have to start somewhere. And this bill is a start.

119. Shouldn't we include time in that calculation? |

Kennedy was a wealthy man as you noted. He could have been on a warm beach somewhere or doing something to further enrich himself and his family. Instead, he fought for liberal/progressive causes like Health Care Reform and for unions and...
What is a person's time worth? How much time on earth do we have? Ted's death illustrates the point rather starkly. Do you think if he had spent $25 million of his own money to pay for others' health care it would have meant more than the effect he had in all his years in the senate? I dont think so. I think we all made out ahead on that deal.
