One of the other things we had to be concerned with was if it wasn't going to pass, it would have been a huge loss for the democrats, Obama in particular, and would have emboldened the republicans - not that they're still not going to be obstructionist jerks, but it's always good when moving on to the next issue to have a victory under one's belt.
There was a big list on DU of the things that Obama has already accomplished - unfortunately, for whatever reason, none of them were really played up by the democrats as much as they should have been, and they were of course ignored by media. This issue though has been in the news for the better part of a year. We had to have a victory of some sort to "shove down the throats" of the republicans and tea-baggers. Anything less, and Obama's presidency would probably have been declared DOA.
