Democrat John Kitzhaber won the last of the big endorsements from the public employee unions Saturday when the Oregon chapter of the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees backed him in the race for Oregon governor.
Kitzhaber, the former governor seeking reclaim his old job, has won a long string of private-sector union endorsements. But this represents his first big public-employee endorsement this year after the Oregon Education Association and the American Federation of Teachers both backed his Democratic rival, former Secretary of State Bill Bradbury.
Service Employees International Union, which with some 48,000 members is about the same size as the OEA, decided a week ago to remain neutral.
"We had a good working relationship with him while he was governor," said Ken Allen, executive director of Oregon AFSCME. "That relationship earned another endorsement from us."
