6. Yes. Pretty much.
Some lingered (Byrd), but most bolted for the Republican Party after that.

Then all those moderate Republicans who voted for it slowly died out. Now those seats are strongly Democratic.

8. Yup.
Politics was far more different back then than it is today. The north was a mix of social liberal Republicans & Democrats. The south was mostly conservative Democrats (a few Republicans, not much).

Then Civil Rights came about and the south turned Republican in a night.

Those Republicans in the north slowly faded away throughout the 70s and 80s. Now they're pretty much gone.

Child Labor Law - Roosevelt, 1938 shortly after Social Security
For all it's flaws this is indeed a great party.
