DU new word thread: "Luntzfail".
Edited on Tue Mar-23-10 07:59 PM by bleever

Inspired by this thread from jefferson_dem, http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=433&topic_id=243576&mesg_id=243576 let's see how many definitions or examples of "luntzfail" we can come up with:

Here's mine:

luntzfail -- n. an attempt to phrase or frame an issue or topic in a form beneficial to one's own point-of-view which results in the opposite effect. When the young man boasted to the girl that he was a teabagger, it was an epic luntzfail.

And here's a photo kindly proffered by Guy Whitey Corngood:

Anyone like to contribute?

:)

9. And under the verb section of the thesaurus, we find 'kristolize'
kristolize (v.t.): to turn a possibility of success into a guarantee of failure with a personal endorsement. Once Bill has spoken in support of her, she knew her chances of election had been utterly kristolized. It looked like she needed that reality TV show after all.

13. Superb!
The outcome of the invasion of Iraq was kristolized when he declared, "There's been a certain amount of pop sociology in America ... that the Shia can't get along with the Sunni and the Shia in Iraq just want to establish some kind of Islamic fundamentalist regime. There's almost no evidence of that at all. Iraq's always been very secular."

18. It's shooting fish in a barrel, but:
The pundit kristolized Hillary's ambitions when he said "Hillary Clinton, it looks like to me, is now going to follow in Bill Clinton's footsteps. If she gets a race against John Edwards and Barack Obama, she's going to be the nominee...Barack Obama is not going to beat Hillary Clinton in a single democratic primary. I'll predict that right now."*

17. "Death panels".
He got lucky with "death tax", but "death panel" sounds so ridiculous it makes the speaker appear obviously hysterical.

25. "Repeal and replace",
from the thread referenced in the OP.

Along with such too-clever-by half phrases like "Louisiana Purchase", "Cornhusker Kickback", "Gator Aid", and the other monikers found hootworthy by the RW radio hosts and knucklehead GOP congresscritters.
