Lawrence O'Donnell's subtle smack down of John McCain

Senator McCain, deep breath. Calm down. You are not the only senator who lost the presidential election and returned to work in the Senate. There is a model for how to do this with dignity, while fulfilling your oath to serve the people without violating your loyalty to your party. He‘s a bit younger than you are, but served in the same war. Like you, he is a decorated Navy man. And he has much to teach you about controlling your temper and preserving your dignity. He‘s right there across the aisle. You can talk to him. He still likes you. The Navy bond is stronger than the Senate bond. Go ahead. Ask John Kerry how he does it.

I saw him say this last night on Countdown and his delivery was snide without being nasty. I'm glad to see that McCain is taking a beating from many pundits for saying what he did. Really, if the guy doesn't want to do the business of the people because his side lost then he shouldn't be running for reelection.

That made me so happy last night. THAT'S the Lawrence O'Donnell I've missed. Twisting the knife about classy John Kerry vs. classless McCain was fantastic. I only talked back to Lawrence when he went on about those who've been slamming this bill all along, to which I had to yell, "Like YOU, Lawrence???"

On the other hand, it did strike me once more what a different debate this COULD have been with some grownups in the room. Much like during McCain's campaign, when I wondered how different he could have appeared had he put a stop to the pre-teabagger frothing at his and Palin's rallies. Had he stepped up during crap like the lipstick on a pig fiasco. Or defended Obama from birthers or Ayers or Acorn freaks. Instead, he played along smugly and wound up humiliated, lost any dignity he may have had.

Here again, think how he could have tried to be a real leader on the Republican side from day one. If he'd really tried to get them to work with the president and the MAJORITY!!! Instead, it's been more grumping and whining and bitching and moaning. McCain could have earned the same type of post-loss statesman role as Kerry. Instead, he's just the "Get off my lawn!" guy.

Thank God, I say. Because as a Dem, I prefer he gets what's coming to him as far as humiliation. But still. It sure could have been different had he stepped up.

I think McCain just never got over the loss to Bush in the primaries in 2000 and then the loss to Obama.

This should go Viral..this is a brilliant contrast of how men of honor behave and how crochety bitter grapes act after they lose the Presidency and return to the Senate.

More than a few could try to emulate Kerry's graciousness and lose their own attitude.
