W.H.: Obama to be covered under new health market

Administration says legislation from Sen. Charles Grassley forcing Obama to use new healthcare plan is unnecessary

By Associated Press

The White House says President Barack Obama will join other Americans in getting health coverage through new purchasing marketplaces established by his health overhaul law.

The so-called "exchanges" won't be up and running until 2014, so Obama's participation as president will depend on his getting re-elected in 2012.

The White House announced Obama's planned participation in a statement Wednesday after Republican Sen. Charles Grassley of Iowa introduced an amendment that would have required Obama to go into the exchanges.

The health law already puts members of Congress in the exchanges but Grassley wanted that requirement extended to Obama, other executive branch officials and all congressional staff.

The White House said the amendment was unnecessary because Obama would participate in the exchange.

1. At least the Plan has some nice ideas...Like Euro's say: The US reached the 20th century..not 21st
Just going thru the good and the bad of the bill and yes it has some nice things but boy does it pale to pretty much every other country in the world. Now i am starting to think as a Canadian i am whining that our universal healthcare doesnt go far enough when i see Americans dont even have even the basics in place yet. It has some nice elements and hopefully in 10-15 years a foundation will be laid to get things going for the nation. Until then, at least there is the Student Loan reform and no pre-existing for children (i am still baffled that, that was an issue before...wtf?)

2. Well he can afford it, as most can who work
for him. So I see this as a no big deal. When the bill finally reaches us "little people" then tell me how good it is.

3. Grassley as always a man void of reason.
Does he not understand how health care plans for federal employees and congressional members and their staff are implemented?

7. And, so will 32 million Americans who
<snip>

"It guarantees all Americans affordable health insurance options, extending coverage to 32 million who are currently uninsured.

And it reduces the cost of care -- cutting over 1 trillion dollars from the federal deficit over the next two decades.

To ensure a successful, stable transition, many of these changes will phase into full effect over the next several years.

But for millions of Americans, many of the benefits of reform will begin this year -- some even taking effect this afternoon. Here are just a few examples:

Small businesses will receive significant tax cuts, this year, to help them afford health coverage for all their employees"

9. "Matt Miller has an interesting idea in yesterday's Washington Post:"

"It's time to demand that GOP leaders, candidates and other would-be Obamacare repealers take a pledge. It should be simple. Something like: "Because I believe so strongly that Democratic health-care reform is a calamity for the country, I hereby vow that neither I nor anyone in my family will take advantage of the protections offered by this law." Those pledging would of course voluntarily surrender their current group health coverage and be thrown into the unregulated market for individual health insurance, so as to swim in the same sea of insecurity as their constituents. A quickie law would be passed allowing insurers to treat pledge-taking Republicans and their families under prior rules, exempting them from the reforms just signed into law by the president."
