**Flash Back: Senator Barack Obama on his Health Care Proposals, Iowa City 5/07 **
Edited on Thu Mar-25-10 09:33 AM by Clio the Leo
In honor of today's return to Iowa City in celebration of the health care LAW, I took a little trip down memory lane to listen to the first speech.

Thought you all might enjoy it too.

Best part? "I will sign a universal health care bill into law by the END of my first term!" ... sure, it's not as universal as any of us would have liked but it's better than what we had and you gotta love how he bested his own promise on the timing.

1. Those flash backs work both ways.
I do provide a mandate for children, because we have created programs in which we can have greater assurance that those children will be covered at an affordable price. But we don’t want to put adults in a situation in which, on the front end, we are mandating them, we are forcing them to purchase insurance, and if the subsidies are inadequate, the burden is on them, and they will be penalized. - Barack Obama February 26, 2008

2. 'not as universal' is just like saying
'a little pregnant'. Universal means universal, not some of or a part of, it means all. A thing that is not inclusive of all is simply not universal at all.
He failed to make that promise good, or has so far. This leaves millions uninsured, millions. Not universal.
Let your yes mean yes, and your no mean no. Universal means universal.

3. Here's another flashback:
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=385x420430

Truth is, the bill that just passed does not even resemble the reform Obama (and the Democratic Party) campaigned on in 2008.
Over the last year, the Democrats dithered away almost everything "Democratic" about the "reform" and got NOTHING in return.

We are left with what is basically a Republican Bill (National RomneyCare).
After all the "Mission Accomplished" parties are over, there will be a sober awakening to WHAT this bill really is.

Not really a smart idea at this time to go back and look at what was promised in 2008.
If Obama had promised Mandates with NO Public Option + a tax increase on the Working Class, he would NOT have gotten my vote or support during the election.
