Teenager takes Biden to task over cuss word
Posted: March 27th, 2010 03:10 PM ET

(CNN) - A 17-year-old student from South Pasadena High School in California took Vice President Joe Biden to task Friday for his use of an un-choice word this week whispered into the ear of President Barack Obama.

"This is a huge deal," McKay Hatch told reporters. "Many kids and adults all over the world look up to Vice President Biden as a role model. He needs to be a good role model for kids and use clean and appropriate language."

Hatch called on Biden to apologize, then packed a "No Cussing Club" T-shirt, wrist bands and penalty jar into a box and carried it to the local post office, cameras documenting his every move and utterance. His goal: "to remind him to use good language."

...

Hatch's Web site, nocussing.com, claims more than 35,000 members and lists his more than 100 appearances on local and national television programs.

It also sells his book "The No-Cussing Club" ($19.95 + $5.50 postage and handling) and his DVD "The Story of the No-Cussing Club ($29.95 +$6 postage and handling) for sale.

99. You cannot compare a verbal attack with an expletive.
That the vocabulary in both instances is on the FCC "do not utter" list is irrelevant.

Calling someone a name is childish. Expletive attributives are commonplace among adults.

5. And even if he did, the kid's still not right.
Why is "fuck" even such a bad word? Especially in the way Biden used it. Unless you're directing it AT someone ("Go fuck yourself"), it's just for emphasis. Who cares?

12. People who have a terrible problem with swearing are not to be trusted.
I seldom use such language but unnaturally stymying it to the point where even small doses cause you to be outraged is generally the preserve of the righteously deranged.

35. welcome to DU! In certain ways, I agree with the kid, people shouldn't loosely go around swearing
repeatedly - it was for effect what Biden did, in a very big moment. Now, I wouldn't have said that, but it's Biden, and it's his choice.

I did look up the kid's video when he was 14 and made his fortune from this, but in the video he decries the "cussing on capitol hill", so he did question Cheney's curse I believe.

But, a wiki type site details an email they got from one of his employees for the company he runs, and at the end he said something along the lines, and let's keep making more money! Something like 2.5 million was the goal. SO, not a big surprise he would jump all over Biden's quasi-salacious curse. It really is no big deal, but people wanting to make money off it would jump on the wagon, and this kid did... barf.

49. I agree. If you're telling someone fuck you, go fuck yourself
then the problem isn't the word you used, it's what you're saying.

In this case it's just a word to emphasize! No different than "This a big huge deal" or whatever.

14. Biden should tell that kid to fuck off. Let me get this straight...
Edited on Sat Mar-27-10 03:01 PM by salguine
This kid has a "No Cussing Club", manufactures "No Cussing Club" T-shirts and wrist bands, and mailed one of each, along with a penalty jar, to the Vice President.

He also has a website called "nocussing.com", has written a book entitled "The No-Cussing Club" and made a DVD "The Story of the No-Cussing Club".

Whenever I see a kid this heavily into some kind of a moralistic crusade when they're still in their teens, it's almost always a precursor to some kind of horrible meltdown later on. People—young people especially—weren't meant to be this tight-assed. I'm gonna bet that sometime when this kid is in his mid- to late twenties, he goes up on top of a high building with a rifle. Or they find the heads of missing prostitutes in his fridge. Something like that. And the neighbors will all say that he was a quiet kid who, especially, never cussed.

And considering how much you hate this bill, I find it ironic that you are so worried about an errant curse at Obama's statement about it.

89. It is odd how some only notice if I do not agree with Obama. The times I have praised him are
completely ignored. Apparently some feel if one doesn't think the president walks on water , one must hate him. I don't.Some of what he has tried to do is worth considering. I have always said he is better than Mccain but to me he is just a politician. And as far as the "cursing" goes, I refuse to be hypocritical about it. I can't stand when any public figure does that be it Biden, Cheney or Rahm. Some think because it is from one of our own it is "different and is now "cool" or "cute" it isn't and Biden, who I have always liked, knows better than this.

among other things. I also praised him for calling for the repeal of DADT but criticized him when he asked for it to be delayed.I could search and find more but why bother? Any criticism of the president is an anathema to you. Unless I kneel and say he is the greatest who ever lived, it isn't acceptable to some.

I never said you couldn't criticize him or that I myself never do, let alone demanding you worship the man.

And finding just two instances of you supporting him when there have been dozens of posts criticizing him for the most mundane things doesn't cut it.

praise worthy. But I have praised him on more than two occasions but I am too lazy to look them up. I am just saying some can't seem to separate the man from the policies. I do not hate him. I don't love him. I really don't care about him per se. Should he be our next nominee, I would vote for him against the GOP. I voted for him in the General last time. I am just not impressed with him. Many of his policies anger me. So what? Some think this is a big deal.I just don't believe in being a "fan" of any pol. I used to be more fascinated by them as people when I was young. I had a huge crush on both Eugene McCarthy and George McGovern. As I grow older I realize they all only support the peoples interest when it collides with their own. Just my opinion.

111. Again, it's not about being a "fan" or liking or disliking him personally.
Personally, I do like him, but I am not a "fan" of any politician, and I will criticize him or others when they're wrong.

It just seems that you personally are front and center about criticizing him for just about everything he does, even when they're positive things. When posters like you seem to make it a point to do so, your gripes seem less and less legitimate, that's all. My two cents.

114. Of course not.
It's just that the longstanding pattern you've pursued of criticizing him for even insignificant things, or things beyond his control, have made what would normally be legitimate criticisms of his policies ring hollow.

And as far as people posting endless praise, I don't think that's healthy, either, though I admit it's a nice contrast to the numerous posters who make Obama look like the reincarnation of Satan.

BTW, this whole thread had nothing to do with the president. I merely commented about not thinking the F word was appropriate in commentary during an historic event. I made no remarks about Obama initially at all. You introduced the subject of the president.

piece of legislation.

Cheney's remark to Senator Leahy was a personal attack.

116.  Sorry in both instances the choice of verbiage was in question.
Whatever. Vulgar language is not appropriate for elected officials in public. But I suppose some will argue I am being Miss Manners about this. Too bad. And it isn't as though I too don't drop F bombs or sometimes use the F word as an adjective but I certainly would never do so on an official occasion. I am sure Joe Biden knows the difference. private speech is a whole lot different and his remarks were far from private speech.

And they always have.

And they always will.

That said, whether you prefer public or official displays of decorum or not, Joe Biden said that the bill just passed by the Congress was a "big fucking deal." Note the coarse selection of adjective but note primarily the affirmation. His remark exuberantly endorsed his boss' accomplishment. My guess is that the enthusiasm was genuine, even as it is well-earned.

What Dick Cheney said to Patrick Leahy was NOT affirming. It was a snide and dismissive "Go fuck yourself." That is an attack.

There's no argument, IMO, equating those two remarks solely on the basis of slang derivation.

126. Hi, Starbucks Anarchist. You know, on a purely selfish note, I think the
whole world would run a lot smoother if it conformed to my exact specifications. I'd like this in place by say, close of business this Friday.

Now. In the OFF-CHANCE that it doesn't conform to my way of thinking, I'm willing to navigate through it on the terms I'm given. One of those terms, or sets of terms, is that certain folks in subcultures speak coarsely. Construction workers. Truck drivers. Ball-players. Vice presidents. 6th graders on the detention bus after school. My grandfather (who was cuss-deaf).

Soldiers. Short-order cooks. John Mayer. The list is pretty long, actually.

I did try to make a point on language in support of a Democratic Vice President I have loved a long time. Evidently I came up well short.

At least it ended on a positive note having occasioned my getting to say hello to you and thanks for the brainy posts on this site. I wish you a spring time full of more daffodils than can be counted.

He said it in a moment of excitement to Obama directly, in what he thought was outside of microphone range, and you act as if he meant to "sully" the whole occasion on purpose.

And you wondering where people draw the line seems ironic because you yourself use the word. Apparently, it's good enough for you, but not public officials, even when they don't intentionally say it publicly.

128.  You choose to misread what I said. I said I use such language myself. But I would never use such
language to describe an historic event when I "knew" my words would be televised and recorded. Having attended several state inaugurations and such events I can't imagine expressing myself with the F word under those conditions. Do you think it would be appropriate to go through a receiving line at an event and comment "Wow, this is a fucking big deal" ? Where does one draw the line? I read your distinction and I don't accept it as valid, nor do I think Jack Nicholson, who I really enjoy has anything to do with this use of this verbiage or its appropriateness in the given situation.
I am not using a "false equivocation". Both the Cheney use of this verbiage , in its place and time, as well as the Biden usage, were inappropriate. I guess we will have to agree to disagree.

only it's not VP Biden..they're blaming President Obama for going along with it and then claiming it means he has no class.:silly:

And, although it sounds like freepers..they're suppose to be dems.

120. I have never heard a good argument against swearing.
People have tried to tell me I am wrong for letting my kids swear, but when I ask them why they have no answer. Superstition has many forms.

148. The kid sounds like he just saw a mo money opportunity for his biz
Nothing to get worked up about.

The VP, of course, was inappropriate. However, when I first heard about it, my immediate impression was "Well at least I know this is something he really does believe in and what's more, believes that the President believes." That actually put a lot of doubts about the non-progressive facets of the bill to rest in my mind.

Now suppose that was the idea all along and it wasn't a true slip :O ?
