He was chosen to keep the northern and southern Whigs from dividing into anti- and pro-slavery factions.
The second Whig president, also a military general who died early in office like the first.
In the next election, the Whigs nominated Winfield Scott. In 3 out of the 4 presidential races in which the Whigs ran a single candidate nationwide, he was a military general war hero.
It seems the Whigs, like many parties before and since, liked to nominate war heroes in order to smooth over the divisions in their party and avoid taking strong stances on issues.
