The party's over for RNC head Michael Steele

By Kathleen Parker
Wednesday, March 31, 2010

What a difference $2,000 in a lesbian bondage strip club makes.

Then again, the latest Republican National Committee scandalita (Press three for Spanglish: "Small scandal") is, alas, just that -- the latest in a string of problems plaguing the RNC when it should be stocking champagne for November.

Who are these goofballs?

The responsible committee staffer has been fired for authorizing donor reimbursement to cover a night out for some "young donors" to the forever-grateful Voyeur, a West Hollywood lesbian bondage-themed nightclub for the discriminating diner. That is, one who finds gustatory stimulation in the presence of, for example, a woman with a horse's bit in her mouth being strapped to the wall by another woman.

To each his own appetizer, I suppose, but something tells me the family-values crowd may not be down with this fundraising approach.

But let's be clear: RNC Chairman Michael Steele had absolutely nothing to do with it. Got that? He wasn't there. He doesn't approve of it. Moving on.

There's just one problem: RNC and lesbian bondage are now tattooed on the American brain, and the buck stops at the top.
Moreover, if G-string spending were the single offense under Steele's leadership, then perhaps this stain would fade, as have others, in time for Republicans to tap into voter frustration. Alas, this is hardly the first or the worst example of Steele's leadership deficit.

More egregious are his spending sprees and preening self-regard. As one party leader put it in an e-mail, the GOP is in trouble when it is seen "as the party of limos (taxis work fine), $6K hotel bills, $2K strip clubs, private jets. What happened to Orbitz or Expedia?"

4. Give me a break. This has nothing to do with DU or anyone being gay, and
everything to do with bad decisions and how those listening will now perceive the GOP. Oh, and Parker's displeasure, which does a heart good.

7. No, it has to do with the RNC misspending funds on inappropriate things
instead of spending it on things to get Repubs elected. Going out to nightclubs, lesbian or straight, is not really like spending money on political ads, is it?

8. Yes, but...

Entertaining donors at a legal venue of entertainment is also not unusual - for many organizations.

IMHO, this one has "come back and bite us in the ass" written on it.

9. This is not unusual?
So entertaining donors at lesbian bondage nightclubs is the norm? I don't think so....And if Dems are stupid enough to do it then they deserve to be lambasted about it too.

10. I have a hot tip for you...

If you are in town for a political convention, stay away from the strip clubs unless you want your illusions shattered - if you can get in.

It happens to be legal for nightclubs to offer a variety of adult entertainment.

Oddly, they tend to be more popular with adults than going for a beer at Chuck E. Cheese.

Whether or not you personally find lesbians, bondage or nightclubs to be "abnormal", getting a table and bottle service at any number of clubs in LA for $2K is pretty normal.

Now, sure, given the general puritanism in the GOP, this titillating tidbit raises a certain discomfort with their base, but how far do you want to go in condemning what you find not to be "normal" here?

11. The whole idea is the GOP puritanism

They're supposed to be "God's Own Party", remember? Their constituents are the ones who brought us the 'Christian Side Hug'

http://www.washingtoncitypaper.com/blogs/sexist/2009/11/23/the-christian-side-hug-front-hugs-be-too-sinful/

The idea is that the republican party likes to put itself on some kind of moral pillar, so its extra funny when it turns out that they've got the same urges and likes as the rest of us damn perverted liberals.

And seriously, watch the video, its the real deal, its not satire.

12. I do not think it is abnormal in the least.

I have been to enough clubs and bars in the last 8 years to last me a life time as my husband plays in band all over CT and especially in Boston and Albany. My personal favorite was always ladies night at the clubs before the band went on, very funny to watch the half naked men come out and the guys in the band all look uncomfortable. I have been around a lot of crazy stuff and seen a lot of crazy stuff go down. By the way, the drunkest people award for all of New England goes hands down to Boston. Lots of drunk guys getting carried out of bars by their buddies.

It would not totally surprise me for politicians to do it but being in the public eye all the time one would think they would be a little more smarter. But Rethugs doing it just adds a level of hypocrisy as they spout all the family values crap and then turn around and do stuff like this.

6. I guess that would depend on whether you donated and where and how
Edited on Wed Mar-31-10 07:47 AM by babylonsister
you thought your hard-earned bucks were being spent. I gave to a political campaign in '08 and I'm pretty sure I'd have been really annoyed if I had read funds were going to partying like this vs. the party I backed.

14. If they were entertaining donors....

...then the question is whether they got more out of those donors than they spent on them.

15. Correction: Steele doesn't approve of it NOW
Edited on Wed Mar-31-10 10:47 AM by rocktivity
Now that the RNC has gotten caught red-handed, which they wouldn't have if their credit card had worked. The RNC approved the reimbursement because the Voyeur event was SUPPOSED to be on the RNC's dime. And the RNC fired the staffer because she embarrassed them by getting caught, not because of fiscal misconduct.
