Mitchell Howie: 'People are tired of business as usual' in Congress
HUNTSVILLE, AL -- The necessary ingredients to run for public office were all there, but Mitchell Howie said they didn't get stirred up until he was attending a meeting led by his congressman last fall.

Howie, who had recently returned home to Huntsville following four years as a lawyer in the Air Force, said he didn't like what he was hearing U.S. Rep. Parker Griffith say at a community meeting at Progressive Union Baptist Church. The lawyer stood up and shared his opinions, and afterward, he said people told him he needed to run against Griffith.

Then a few weeks later, when Griffith switched political parties and announced he was now a Republican, Howie, 30, decided to do what those people at the church recommended.

"I've always had the urge to serve my community," the Democrat said. "That's why I joined the military. This is just another way to serve.
