Duke University Basketball is like the Entrenched Washington Bureaucracy |
|
You can shake it, you can rattle it, but, in the end, it shall outlast you!
(See the past 14+ months if you don't believe me.)

Late in the game Butler had 4 shots go IN then out. Tough luck for shure.

8. Sounds like they didn't deserve to win at all then. |
|
You'd have a point if those shots fell and they were called void by the refs.
But if they didn't fall?

The layup Haywood made but the ref called a charge.

11. i was rooting for butler but its foolish to pick out one call in a 40 minute game |
|
It was a well officiated game, imo, not because the refs didn't miss any calls, but because they called it the same both ways. Both teams were allowed to play with a lot of contact.
The real story: Duke and Butler each came into the game shooting around 44 percent from the field for the season. Duke shot 44 percent in the game. Butler shot 34 percent. Too many close in shots that were too hard off the backboard or rushed was the story for Butler in the end. But it was a great great effort, one that will be remembered a very long time.

12. It's every fans' perrogative to personally analyze a game. |
|
Invites spar which is fun. I thought Butler rushed shots too but Duke is great defensively (Coach K's evil eye would spot slackers) and face a chewing out. Maybe Bobby Plump was channeling Haywood saying 'DONT make it - I want to preserve my legend.'

6. I soooo wanted little Butler to win |
|
I grew up in Indianapolis, not far from Butler. And I even have a connection: when I was 12 or so I played "Clara" in the Butler Ballet's touring production of The Nutcracker. Whoop-dee-doo!

7. I'm sure that Dick Vitale is in a swoon over his precious Duke taking all the marbles. |

I usually like to watch ESPN for the post mortem discussion, but knowing that Duke's win will sweep Dick Vitale in a violent frenzy with his talk about Coach K, I ducked out.
You can only take conversation about Duke and Coach K for so long. Vitale has been blathering on about this stuff since the days of Christian Laettner.
Enough is enough.

13. It's not that I hate Duke as |
|
much as I'm tired of hearing that stupid Vitale go on and on about the individual players for Duke. "Shane Battier!"
And Dick did the same thing last season with Tyler Hansboro. It got to where I hated to watch a game when Hansboro played.

Duke has a record of success. Washington? Not so much. Duke's basketball team is consistently effective. DC? Not known for efficacy. Duke has an aura of respectability. The beltway fairly stinks of corruption and vice.
So mighty Duke University just beat a team from a tiny Indiana college (only 4,200 students) by two points. Good for them; they earned the championship. But I don't think they got there because coach K advised them to emulate Congress!
