The whole world was excited today
during the START signing in Prague, TV channels from all over were not only covering it non-stop, there was such enthusiasm. At last, after so many years, the global community can actually celebrate something POSITIVE. And the major reason for this is the president of the United States.

Yet in this president' country, no one gives a damn. Not the media and not the people. This country is in a terribly depressing place right now.

1. Because we know the Senate has to ratify it for it to be valid. They didn't ratify previous treaties
with the Soviets/Russians.

Sorry, we know our history better.

4. Of course they did. And they will this time too. This is a lame and fact-less excuse.

5. No, the US Senate NEVER ratified the SALT II treaty. Sorry, you're WRONG. nt

9. You are correct.
"Six months after the signing, the Soviet Union deployed troops to Afghanistan, and in September of the same year senators including Henry M. Jackson and Frank Church discovered the so-called "Soviet brigade" on Cuba. In light of these developments, the treaty was never formally ratified by the United States Senate. Its terms were, nonetheless, honored by both sides until 1986 when the Reagan Administration withdrew from SALT II after accusing the Soviets of violating the pact."http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Strategic_Arms_Limitation_Talks#SALT_II

It was honored until 1986.

I do think there is a possibility this particular treaty could pass the Senate.

12. That treaty still set a standard
and limited the nuclear arms race between the two countries. I am so disgusted with your comments I can't even respond.

14. What's disgusting? I'm FOR this treaty and I hope the senate gets its head out of its ass
and votes for it. But they're capable of doing any stupid thing.

The theory during the Cold War was that any arms treaty was good for us. And that was true. The US abided by the SALT II treaty for a while - that's when they filled silos on missile subs with concrete in Norfolk to comply.

But the senate is full of scare mongering idiots.

7. but bush made backing out of a treaty (formerly known as the supreme law of the land) so easy
now the senate can ratify any old treaty, knowing a president is free to ignore it on a whim.
it's kinda like a non-binding vote in that sense.

back when a treaty was the "supreme law of the land", like it says in that quaint of piece of paper known as the "constitution", they had to think really hard before ratifying.

now, perhaps, not so much.

2. I so agree! We barely heard about this very positive historic moment!
I think the pundits are still trying to find a way to spin this against our President!

I know they'll find a way. . .Probably "weak on terrorism" type of approach!

It is so tiring and depressing to ALWAYS wait to hear more negativity thrown at our leader!

17. Yes, I know! But it certainly vouch well for intention and, with this President
especially, he has demonstrated that he goes after his vision against all odds!

At the very least, he deserves recognition for taking this step. . .obviously, with the NAY sayers in Congress. . .it's still a long way resolution!

By the way. . .why did Reagan get so much credit for ending the cold war. . .just for saying "bring down that wall???"

3. Kick
I am astonished at the right criticizing this.

Reagan not only did the same but would be applauding.
the right is actually siding and quoting the Iranian president Armnadinacrazy...

remarkable that hate that flows from those loons.

I just got up because I tried to stay awake last night and watch it. I am appalled at the lack of attention to this. It's too astonishing for words.

16. our media is for corporate rule only
and they want the tea party rethugs to take the country back. Hence all the attention to them and very little if not nothing on our wonderful president and his amazing accomplishments in such a hostile environment.

Bring back the fairness doctrine!!!!!!!
