19. I would be shocked if its Liu |
|
He was just nominated to the Court of Appeals. I suspect that the idea is to get him onto that court and have him teed up replace Ginsburg if/when she steps down.
I'm thinking a white protestant male will be named to replace Stevens.

I'm first down: after all sorts of gyrations, President Obama will promote a financial (corporate) centrist who is "left of center" on social issues to replace Stevens.
I bet a round of adult beverages: ;) :toast:

Or will they just go ahead and start the smearing immediately? That's my only question.
On edit: Apparently, "Ignored" has already answered my question.

glad he's doing it well before the mid-term elections. I'm not making any November predictions, but considering the batshit crazy tone of many "americans" these days, I'm not optimistic. We need to get as much done as possible before then . . .

22. I predict the right actually puts up less of a fight than everyone is thinking. |
|
Stevens' replacement does not tip the balance of the court--it's still a conservative court.
They didn't filibuster Sotomayor--in fact, 8 Republicans ended up voting for her in the full Senate, including Lindsey Graham and Lamar Alexander.
If it was Scalia or Thomas who was being replaced, they'd raise hell--but I actually predict that this fight will not surpass the Sotomayor fight in terms of ugliness.

31. She was a hispanic woman ... |
|
BO check mated them out of the gate ...
They had a point of diminishing returns throwing their crape at her where their small mindedness started to bite them in the tail - knocking one of the few woman and first real hispanic to be nominated ...
And it still turned into a small scale three ring circus ...
They are in full out jaggoff mode going into the mid term - I can tell you now, without knowing who it is, that the MSM will be wildly parroting the "most left wing, extremist, unamerican SC nominee in history ..."

25. Didn't think about that one but sounds intriguing. |
|
He's young, with trailblazing experience in the "legal world", and without a record as a judge, and would be a stellar minority pick. That's good. Plus he's not exactly a big hit as governor. I worry about his role in the Piscataway v. Taxman case, however. It's another hot button affirmative action deal that could blow up.

30. I know some disagree, but I predict |
|
that the GOP will filibuster whoever is nominated. They will attempt to force the President to withdraw his first suggested nominee, in an attempt to help secure their base for November.
They didn't filibuster Sotomayor because they were afraid of further alienating the Hispanic vote.
Now, if the SCOTUS has only eight justices for a while, it becomes a more right-wing court. If Obama nominates a centrist, it goes more to the right. If Obama nominates someone whose views are almost identical to Stevens. the court doesn't move to the right, and the GOP will filibuster.
The Republicans understand something Democrats deny: in Washington, 41>59. Which is insane, but anyway. Whoever Obama nominates will be rejected unless he appeases conservatives, which is a result that would be worse for the country.
It's going to be a hot, noisy summer.

36. They have already released the short list. I say the likeliest candidate on it |
|
is Janet Napolitano. He owes her big time and she blew her chance to run for the Senate to do Homeland Security when he asked, though it wasn't the position she wanted so she needs to be rewarded. At least with Janet, choice would be protected.
