No Place Like Home: Sen. Bennett to Remain on Campaign Trail
When the Senate reconvenes next week after a two-week recess, the chamber will be short one lawmaker.

Republican Sen. Bob Bennett will not return to Washington, D.C. before the hotly contested May 8 caucus that could determine his electoral fate.

A spokesman for his campaign confirmed that the Utah Republican will remain in his home state to campaign ahead of the caucus, when 3,500 elected delegates could determine who the next senator from Utah will be.

Unlike most states that use primary elections to determine candidates, Utah uses a caucus-convention system. Last month, Republican delegates were elected for the upcoming caucus. If one candidate secures 60% of the delegate vote next month they are guaranteed the nomination, and all but guaranteed to be the next senator because the Republican will be heavily favored to win in November. Utah is one of the most conservative states in the nation.
