If Obama had nominated someone
worrisome the first time around, I could better understand the endless whining about who he may appoint this time.

If I've seen one comment bemoaning that he'll absolutely make a lousy choice, I've seen a hundred.

You all doing this shit need to get a grip.

4. The problem is not that DUers listen to the BS media
The problem is that this administration has a history of listening to the BS media, and then backing down.

before people start frothing and gnashing teeth. :)

16. I don't recall them backing down on Sotomeyor?
I do recall many on DU disliking her and calling her to far to the right.

there must be some way to kill the time.

3. It's pre-history.
Analyzing events before they happen. They hand out PhDs in that at several universities. Feardham University, SUNY Werescrewnemton, and UC Santa OhHolyShitWe'reAllInTroubleNow-a, specifically.

5. Obama is always looking for the middle
If the right is screaming bloodly murder and the left is relatively silent, guess where he thinks the middle is?

15. This
Although given the Obama administration's dismissal of the left in earlier decisions I'm not sure speaking out is going to matter much.

The guy is a centrist who goes out of his way to avoid partisan fights. Not the kind of president you want to take into a Supreme Court nomination fight against radical conservatives itching for a fight.

Hopefully he'll surprise me.

19. A relatively silent left? WHERE?
Edited on Sat Apr-10-10 05:38 PM by boppers
I could use some peace and quiet from time to time, a place where isn't Obama getting a constant shit-storm of mud flung at him by the holier-than-though-left? It's certainly not the case on DU.

edit: typo

6. +Infinity. That's what I've been seeing. He made a great choice the first time around.
He has a lot to choose from and something to look up to the second time around...so I can see it being hard. But I have no doubt he will do well. I don't get these new threads myself.

20. What's worrisome is how old Obama's top candidates are, I mean Thomas was in his low 40's
We shouldn't be nominating people in their upper 50's or even in their 60's, I'm sorry but they may be qualified, but they can't serve on the court as long. Younger nominees are better able to wait till the right time to retire, and less likely to get sick and die when a republican who will replace them with an ultra conservative is in the white house. We cannot afford to let the neocons get another hard right judge on the court, that'll lose the court for us for decades, and as a guy in his mid 20's I don't want to live a country with a tyrant ultra conservative supreme court majority taking away the rights of persecuted minorities, banning abortion. There's too much at stake.

21. truefully we don't know how his first pick turned out yet
She hasn't ruled on that many cases and virtually none on things where her views weren't already known. When I see her first gay rights case, I'll know if I like her or not.

25. maybe, maybe not
different people have different levels of paper trails. Sotomayor had no paper trail on gay rights issues nor any personal hook. Sullivan and Kagan both do for example.

26. neither Sullivan nor Kagan have "paper trails" as judges
You may be right, particularly on gay rights issues, but in general, the paper trail of an academic or practitioner does not necessarily indicate how, as one of 9 justices, an individual will rule or the reasoning that they will offer for decisions.
