Barbour, advisers privately mull 2012 run
When asked about his presidential ambitions, Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour told reporters earlier this year that “If you see me losing 40 pounds that means I’m either running or have cancer."

It might be time to start watching Barbour’s waistline.

POLITICO has learned that Barbour is weighing the prospect of a 2012 White House bid and convened a private meeting April 8 with a group of some of his oldest and closest advisers, some of whom flew in from the East Coast to Jackson, Miss. The gathering stretched for six hours, during which time the topic of a presidential run was discussed.

One adviser familiar with the state capital sit-down said that Barbour concluded that he did not need to make a decision now and that the group should meet again after this fall’s election.

Barbour, who as chairman of the Republican Governors Association is directing the GOP’s efforts to win the 37 governors' races this year, told his team that he would remain focused intently on November but also made clear that he would stay open to the prospect of a presidential run.

4. They have nobody worth running. Their whole party has become a parody

of itself.

Barbour, a white redneck that speaks like he has a mouth full o'cracklin, really believes he has a white sheet chance in hell?

Good! Go for it, Boss Hog! Make Sarah P Yeti your running mate and drive the GOP off the cliff.

Please...

8. Actually I am ready for a FAT president
Fat people take too much grief and ridicule already.
If a fat man can get elected, fat people might get more respect.

11. The country already had William Howard Taft, 340 pounds. Today he'd have pulled a Huckabee and...

... gotten bariatric surgery. As it was, Taft had severe obstructive sleep apnea, which is a killer, and it only resolved after he left office and lost lots of weight. He was healthier and more productive as a Chief Justice because of that.

There were several obese presidents in the 19th century and early 20th century, as one can see by looking at their portraits. But as a friend of mine complained regarding Kucinich's chances as a presidential candidate -- that was before television.

I seriously doubt that electing "a fat man" would bring more respect to "fat people" in this culture. Most of the country is already overweight, but we demand that all of our public figures be svelte.

23. Very thoughtful and informative post!
But you gotta remember Taft was pre-TV.

In this age of 24 hour new cycle and TV & internet, a fat person
will have heckuva time getting elected.

And you are so right, majority of Americans are fat yet they want
the president to be normal.

12. Yes, b/c the response to Obama should be delivered...
... by a fat, old, white, cigar-chomping, ex-tobacco lobbyist from Mississippi... with a history of racist statements and associations with white-supremacist groups.

Yeah, that's the ticket.

14. I'm sure Barbour sees himself as a valid candidate but the GOP is
already in danger of being perceived as a regional party.

Plus, he's just too much of a throwback. He's super-connected to the corrupt Republican establishment -- and for longer than most people can remember -- and would repel a lot of independent voters.

I'm not seeing a whole lot of people in their 20s and 30s lining up to vote for Haley Barbour either.

He'll get single digits in the GOP primary everywhere else. Boss Hog does not sell outside that region, except on a TV show.
