65 years later, New Yorkers recall FDR's funeral train

HYDE PARK — Sixty-five years ago this month, the eyes of the world turned to Hyde Park as Franklin D. Roosevelt came home for the last time.

Tens of thousands of people lined the tracks as the funeral train slowly made the three-day journey from Warm Springs, Ga., to Washington and on to Hyde Park. As a war was waged in Europe and the Pacific, America's longest-serving president was laid to rest April 15, 1945, in the Rose Garden of Springwood, the Hyde Park estate where he was born in 1882 and spent much of his life and presidency. It was a moment of sadness and uncertainty, as Americans coped with losing the man who had led them through the Great Depression and amid the chaos of World War II.

Bernard Kessler, 87, of Hyde Park remembers attending the graveside service as a young attorney of 22.

"It was a very sad day for everybody," he said. "They set up a stone there in the rose garden. Everything was beautifully laid out."

2. I remember going to the train station
in my town with my grandfather to watch the train as it passed through. It went very slowly and many people were there to see it with tears in their eyes. It was very emotional. If I remember correctly I was 11 years old.
