Weird question about Obama's passport in Parade Magazine today
Obama's Presidential Passport
Q Is the President of the United States required to carry a passport when he travels abroad?--Janet Haislip, Redlands, Calif.

A Yup. "A U.S. President has the same entry requirements as any U.S. citizen," says Adriana Gallegos of the Bureau of Consular Affairs. Bet you a nickel he's never been asked for it, though.

1. If they'd look, it was issued from Kenya.
That's where this one was going.

Parade Magazine, the most worthless use of wood pulp on Earth.

2. Although he is the leader of the still most powerful country,he is
just an elected official, a citizen, who must show his origination. It is interesting, but I don't think it is a weird question.

4. We have a Black President and suddenly he is suppose to carry his passport
Edited on Sun Apr-18-10 01:09 PM by Hutzpa
Did they asked George Bush and Bill Clinton the same question, I wonder.

I don't remember seeing an article about American President carrying their passport.

This is exactly the problem.

Oh! I forgot he was born in Kenya and was then transported to Hawaii by terrorists.

17. Maybe because they already knew Clinton had one since they serched his file
http://www.nytimes.com/1992/11/18/us/state-dept-official-who-searched-clinton-s-passport-files-resigns.html?pagewanted=1

WASHINGTON, Nov. 17— A State Department official who carried out the two-day search of passport files for information about Gov. Bill Clinton said today that he had resigned, just 48 hours before Federal investigators are expected to issue a report criticizing the search.

The official, Steven M. Moheban, was a top aide to Elizabeth M. Tamposi, the Assistant Secretary of State for Consular Affairs who was dismissed last week by President Bush for her role in the search of files on Mr. Clinton, his mother, Virginia Kelley, and Ross Perot, the independent Presidential candidate.

"I resigned Monday," said Mr. Moheban, a 30-year-old native of Nashua, N.H., Ms. Tamposi's hometown. "I no longer work for the State Department."

21. Yes - all presidents have to present their passport when traveling to another country
When Air Force One lands anywhere outside of the U.S., officials from the foreign government go onto the plane and process everyone's passport, including the president's. Of course, it is expedited and handled with great deference and respect. Much of this is taken care of far in advance - the foreign country has a complete manifest of who is on the plane and the actual processing of the passports is done very quickly. But the president's passport is processed along with all of the others before he gets off of the plane.

This is also the case when a foreign leader travels to the United States. Interestingly, one of the few foreign leaders who does not have a passport is the Queen of England, since all British passports are issued in her name.

That place is aptly named. I'm sure the person asking was trying to find some sort of gotcha.

10. Actually the answer is not correct

I am fairly certain that as head of government the President would be issued a Diplomatic Passport.

12. OK you want to get serious about it - The President of the US would not get a diplomatic passport
but an 'official one'

Official (maroon cover)
Issuable to citizen-employees of the United States assigned overseas, either permanently or temporarily, and their eligible dependents, and to members of Congress who travel abroad on official business. Period of validity: generally five years from the date of issue.<39> Illustration: cover – right.

(I am assuming that the President, members of the cabinet and Supreme Court Justices would also get it if ordinary members of Congress would)

19. I could honestly see waiving it
for anyone they know is a USC. The reason we plebes have to show it, is we are unknown. But it would be absurd to require it of Bill or Hillary or even celebrities like Liz Taylor. OTOH, maybe they are worried about look alikes - you know terrorists who have plastic surgery to disguise themselves as Bill Clinton.

As a British citizen he might need some type of visa.

I remember how John Lennon was almost deported!

24. My brother-in-law works overseas for the US government
His family lives with him overseas. So his family and him have diplomatic passports. It was very funny to see my two year old nephew with a diplomatic passport. Like having diplomatic immunity would prevent him from getting timeouts or such.

25. I don't think it's that strange
I've kinda always wondered about the passport thing with presidents. I knew there were diplomatic passports (a friend has one), but didn't know there was an "official" passport.
