Tallahassee Democrat: McCollum's Lawsuit Against National Healthcare Hurting Him in New Poll
(Obama's approval has also rebounded here in Florida, as well--a 9 point swing.)
McCollum's lawsuit against national healthcare hurting him in new poll

APRIL 19, 2010

TALLAHASSEE -- Attorney General Bill McCollum's lawsuit against national health care may be costing him politically, as new statewide poll shows the race for governor tightening.

And coming out in favor of offshore oil drilling is apparently helping President Obama in the state.

The Quinnipiac University Poll released this morning shows McCollum leading Chief Financial Officer Alex Sink 40 to 36 percent.

By a margin of 54 to 40 percent, voters surveyed by Quinnipiac said it was a "bad idea" for McCollum to join 13 other states in filing suit against the federal health care plan. But voters mostly disapprove of the health plan itself, by a margin of 48-44 percent.

Obama's overall approval rating has rebounded since January -- from 45-49 percent negative to 50-45 percent favorable in Florida.

On the oil issue, Quinnipiac found that voters approve of drilling off the Forida coast by a margin of 64-28 percent.

The poll was conducted April 8-13 among 1,250 registered voters. It has a margin of error of 2.8 percent.

2. Well gee, maybe the idiot could have figured that out. I hope Sink

4. 'Usually cautious' Sink is starting to get 'pissed off!'
Usually cautious Sink insists she's outraged

On a day when thousands of protesters took to the streets in anti-government "tea parties'' around Florida, Chief Financial Officer Alex Sink tried on the politics of anger.

It's not a natural fit for the leading Democratic candidate for governor. True to her banking background, the ever-cautious Sink is no firebrand.

But facing criticism for losing campaign momentum and ducking her party's debate over healthcare reform, Sink pulled a little blue book out of her purse to present her "outrage list.''

"If people say I'm not passionate or angry enough, all I have to do is open my book,'' she quipped during an interview Thursday.

Topping her list: insufficient public funding for children and public education, a controversial, just-vetoed bill that would largely take away teacher tenure and her ideas to trim the gut-busting state budget.

"Someone saying that will only save $300,000 really pisses me off,'' she said, using her best angry voice. "That's six teachers. And now we're going to cut the Healthy Start program for young children? How stupid is that?''

5. Opening his mouth hurts McCollum.
One other thing about this poll. The 64% of voters that approve of oil drilling have no idea how Florida's economy works. People come here because we don't have globs of oil on our beaches.

7. I do not believe the oil drilling numbers.
I live on the gulf coast and can't imagine seeing oil rigs from the beach. Those numbers seem to be reversed.
