4M Estimated to Pay Health Care Penalty in 2016

Failure to Buy Coverage Would Result in a $1,000 Fine in New Law, Affecting Mostly the Middle Class, Reports the CBO

(AP) Nearly 4 million Americans will have to pay a penalty if they fail to get health insurance when that element of President Barack Obama's health care overhaul law kicks in, according to congressional projections released Thursday.

The penalties will average a little more than $1,000 apiece in 2016, the Congressional Budget Office said in a report.

The vast majority of people paying the fine will be middle class, which would violate Obama's 2008 campaign pledge not to raise taxes on individuals making less than $200,000 a year and couples making less than $250,000.

2. Candidate Obama attacked McCain and Hillary for their proposed mandates
Now he is giving us the mandates, with the horrible IRS as the goon squad to enforce it.

3. currently unemployed and uninsured, 3x bypass, severe mental illness
With $11,000 in income, including $2500 taxable inheritance, I don't really expect Obama's HIGH RISK POOL to do me very much good.

I'm looking for a soft place under a rock, where I can just die.

7. It is a CBO report, the same CBO some folks put so much trust as to HRC's cost
I guess some people only believe those things that do not threaten their private universe, like those Creationists that reject any evidence that the Earth is older that 10,000 years.

10. your private Universe is Anti-Obama on every issue. have you noticed that?
You pretend like it's just issue based,
but when its every single issue, it's obvious where you stand.

5. It is not a tax, but a fine, therefore it violates nothing
The fine is justified, because among the people who opt not to be insured, there will be some that have expensive illnesses or injuries who will be treated at the country's hospitals - and that will result in their cost being absorbed by the hospitals.

8. Like Reagan's assertion that an increase in fees was not a tax increase?

12. The IRS is the most unpopular arm of the federal government, and it is a bipartisan unpopularity
Using the IRS as the enforcer of the health mandates was an strategic and tactical error of major proportions.

15. That Health Insurance Reform law remains a transfer of wealth from the workers
to the blood sucking insurance industry. Union members always saw the mandate as a Chevy tax that would hit their pocketbooks. It still remains that! The recent stories about Wellpoint and Blue Cross are just the tip of the iceberg.

17. We could have had given the people the option to go under Medicare
instead we will see what little money we have go into the pockets of the health insurance industry, with high co-pays, high rates, and lousy coverage.

Those that have money invested in the industry are the only winners!

19. As Pelosi said the tax as enacted is a platinum Rolles Royce tax
The fact is the one union that still was against it, used projections that were beyond ridiculous. The fact is that companies would never negotiate that level of coverage.

20. A platinum Rolls Royce tax,
Which makes it kind of interesting that a baseball player who drives a platinum Rolls Royce with the health care to match will be exempt.

18. What did Reagan say that about?
Edited on Thu Apr-22-10 05:54 PM by karynnj
The fact is the real Reagan tax increases with the relatively regressive increase on the FICA taxes.

The fact is that the pool of uninsured will cost the country as a whole because our value is not to deny hospital care. It is fair to give them a fee to compensate for part of that risk.

PS I actually did live near Peoria - but, other that the phrase, I knew the name most from work in an office at a steel mill that shipped steel to Caterpillar there - and yes, I was in the union.

13. 3M will have incomes under $59,000 for individuals
About 3 million of those required to pay fines in 2016 will have incomes below $59,000 for individuals and $120,000 for families of four, according to the CBO projections. The other 900,000 people who must pay the fine will have higher incomes.

Like many unions charged during the debate, this is a Chevy tax.

21. Two Things...
1) There are $0 fines to be collected if everybody goes out and obtains health insurance.

2) There are $0 fines to be collected because the IRS has no authority to collect them. It's specifically prohibited.

This is getting quite tiresome.
