U.S. Firms Raise Hiring on Optimism Over Recovery
Oh noes! More bad news....if you're Debbie Downer.

WASHINGTON — U.S. companies expect to hire more and fire less as they become more confident that the economy will continue to recover in 2010, a survey released Monday by the National Association for Business Economics shows.

The share of companies increasing payrolls rose to 22% from 13% in January, the survey of 68 NABE members conducted between Mar. 25 and Apr. 10 showed. The poll reflects first-quarter 2010 results and the near-term outlook.

“NABE’s April 2010 industry survey confirms that the U.S. recovery from the Great Recession continues, with business conditions improving,” said William Strauss of the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago.

4. Over reaction
The depth of the recession was driven in large part by an over reaction by consumers. They cut spending not because they lost income, but they feared an income loss. Those fears are recediing, so money is being spent again. Throw in the fact that many stocks and bonds had lost value because people were forced to sell them, and you have a reason for their value to return, once the markets move the forced sales through the system.

All of which is a way of saying that mostly we are getting TO the place we should have fall to in the first place. That's a whole lot different than saying that we are anywhere near where we were, or where we want/need to be. Unemployment of 6 - 8% may be a reality for a long time. Under employment will also be a significant problem well into the future. Both of these have to be rectified and that will take some long, slow, growth in the economy. If you bought your house between about 2005 and 2007, it may be 20 years before it will sell again for what you are currently paying for it. That will be a problem for a long time.

2. The hiring freeze at my company
is slowly being lifted. It's never been a really tight freeze, we could hire critical replacements but now we are starting to see a bit more movement in addition to the critical head count.

I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

10. Not sure I'd call myself a "bright sider"
Really, this is a case of "now that we've all stopped screaming, has anyone noticed the wound is still bleeding?"

It didn't get as bad as some feared. They're starting to figure that out. Some corrections are being made. No one knows what the future holds.

11. Good lord the only one that seems to be expecting agreement is you.
Nice immature name calling . If you feel that what has been written is wrong fine but stop the insults and prove or defend your point.

17. I prefer descriptive grouping over name calling.
I wish I cold be enthusiastic over the future, its hard to keep your head up while the quicksand is continuing to slowly pull you under.

Perhaps you are doing OK, I am not, nor just about anyone I know. If I recover 1/10 of what I have lost I will be surprised.

12. Nothing in that article says all employers would be adding jobs. The point
Was there was an increase in the number of employers who said they would be hiring which is a good thing.

14. our company is not only NOT adding jobs, they are deleting 400 existing jobs
I have been actively looking for a different job for months - there is nothing. So while I *hope* there is an uptick in job availability here in America I must admit to not feeling overly optimistic yet.

15. I can understand
your sentiments. Companies do on occasion lay people off even in a good or improving economy. There is never a good time to lose a job, and this time seems still pretty tough. Good luck finding new work.

16. The tide of good news
will soon become to large to effectively deny. But there are those who will persist regardless. Even though the evidence of the glaciers melting can be seen in photographs, there remain those who deny global warming as well.

19. Where exactly are these glorious jobs going to come from? How will they materialize?
Edited on Tue Apr-27-10 08:56 AM by ShortnFiery
Production has never been better. Given that fact, again - WHERE is this job market? The Census hirings can't last forever and we already use MACHINES to check out our groceries at Walmart and Shoppers.

21. Purchases
is more than going to Wal-Mart and getting a t-shirt, or picking up groceries. Sales of homes are up, sales of durable goods are up, sales of autos are up, companies are hiring. Don't be so intentionally obtuse, it is unbecoming and sooner rather than later will look more than a tad foolish.

It is important to remember that markets are not rational. It is essentially true that if people believe the economy is better, it will be better. It is truly no more difficult than that. People buy stuff, others are hired to make stuff, they then go and buy stuff, and more people are hired to make stuff..... It is not one bit more complicated than this.
