Obama warns of racial profiling as a result of Arizona law on immigration
By Eric Zimmermann - 04/27/10 06:15 PM ET

President Barack Obama warned Tuesday that the new Arizona immigration law could lead to racial profiling.

Speaking to a town hall in Iowa, Obama brought up the Arizona law when asked about immigration reform.

"You know, you can try to make it really tough on people who look like they, quote, might be illegal immigrants," Obama said, suggesting that approach wouldn't work.

"You can imagine if you are a Hispanic American in Arizona, your great grandparents may have been there before Arizona was even a state," he said. "Now suddenly if you don't have your papers and you take your kid out for ice cream and you're going to be harrassed, that's not the right way to go."

Obama has previously called the law "misguided."

1. more extreme partisanship from Obama
Well, not really, but Meghan McCain identified his description of the law as "misguided" as an example of the "extreme partisanship" surrounding this issue: "And when a flawed law is magnified through the prism of extreme partisan politics, it only looks worse. With President Obama calling the law “misguided” and the mainstream media painting Arizona out to be a rogue state, all it does is make people go to greater lengths to defend their position."

Based on this new comment, it sounds like he's ramping up the partisanship even further. :)
