So the Oil Rig Exploded on April 22nd and Began Leaking Oil Either April 23rd or April 24th
So why is today the day it hit the fan in the news media and online? Were Frank Luntz and his talking points minions on vacation and just this morning realized "Hey if we call this Obama's Katrina, the sycophantic news media will bite"?

2. Makes sense to me....that they would think that...I mean.
Guess it took Luntz this long to come up with the perfect turn of phrase.

8. Didn't take Luntz to make the comparison
I heard similar comparisons (in terms of the natural disaster affecting the region) in the foreign press several days ago.

3. It is the day the oil hit land.
Until that point no major media thought it was concern.

4. Kinda hard to keep it underwraps with hundreds of miles of oily beach.
They had no choice but to start reporting it.

5. Because the Republicans and their cohorts in the media are trying
to draw comparisons to Katrina. Snarky questions being asked about why no action sooner, crap like that.
Of course, the Coast Guard has been there since day one. The idiots conveniently forget that the first few days the Coast Guard was on a search and rescue for victims.

6. to be fair....
... the spill was "discovered" to be five times larger on Wed. night. BP realized it or BP announced it, however you want to look at it. That's the main reason why its suddenly a big deal.

anything else to talk about.

10. Because the major media works for the MIC
and they obviously are big supporters of offshore drilling, or any drilling for that matter. They were hoping this "would go away." So was Obama. But now it's turning into a catastrophe and the question has to be asked: were all the forces that possibly could have contained this mobilized quickly and in full force. To me, it doesn't seem that happened. In fact, after Exxon Valdez, you'd think there would be a Federal plan in effect with overwhelming resources applied immediately to control the damage. Convinve me if I'm wrong, but I haven't seen that kind of plan or response. And now the catstrophe has gotten out of control and severe damage is being done. .

11. Diaper Dave Vitter inadvertently showed their cards this morning
He said to this effect: BP is responsible for the spill. They should be responsible for stopping the leak. The Coast Guard and Fish and Wildlife need to take responsibility for keeping the coastline clean.

This is a member of the "Let's Privatize the Government" crowd. Yeah, let's privatize it, and let corporations run things--until they cause a multi-billion-dollar environmental disaster that THEY are responsible for cleaning up. Vitter was trying to shift responsibility to the taxpayers. Just like Luntz and the rest are doing with the "Obama's Katrina" bullshit. They're trying to protect their corporate donors' profits, and while they're at it trying to lie and weasel their way back into power. Nothing new here.

12. The propagandists were minimizing the problem. Even here on good old DU we had
"experts" insulting others for being concerned. One self proclaimed expert even stated the problem was much less than originally thought.

Now that oil hitting the shoreline is inevitable, the corporate apostles have shifted the meme. The purpose remains the same: minimize damage to the extraction industry and their billionaires.
