Poll question: Do you plan to vote for Obama in 2012?
There is a DU poll result suggesting incredible dissatisfaction, but it was a poll about Afghanistan so probably not really representative. (For starters, the only people looking at the thread wanted to read or be polled about Afghanistan--probably not the most random sample of DU. Posting this in GDP might have an opposite effect, but it seems the appropriate forum.)

Do you plan to vote for Obama in 2012?

I do not vote in most of my polls but I will start this one with a "Will vote for" I can see being tempted to to cast a Gene McCarthy style primary vote (though on the economy more than the war) but when push comes to shove I probably wouldn't. Incumbent presidents with primary challengers have a poor track record: LBJ, Ford, Carter, Bush I. So I wouldn't want to chance it. And, of course, a lot can change between now and 2012. This is a poll of current thinking.

1. This is premature. We don't know if President Obama will be the Democratic candidate in 2012

He's hinted that he might not run and even if he runs the Democratic Party might not pick him as the Presidential candidate.

Actually, I think there is now at least a 50/50 chance he won't be the nominee because of the wars and state of the economy in 2012.

3. Possible, but a poll should have limited options
Being about the future is intrinsically somewhat hypothetical -- Will you vote for Obama (unspoken: assuming that he is on the ballot)

9. If Sanders or Dean runs I might vote for either of them instead of Obama
That could even be a ticket in 2012 .... Sanders/Dean! That would be a formidable ticket and it's not even excluded that they could be the Democratic nominees in 2012.

But, like I said, this is premature.

Otherwise, good ticket.

2. How about "Didn't in 2008 and won't in 2012"
And another one that says "Didn't in 2008, won't in 2012, but didn't vote for Kerry, Gore or Clinton either".

Cuz those are the answers I really want to see,

16. You're doing McCarthyism again
Edited on Tue Dec-01-09 04:29 PM by Ken Burch
The vast majority of antiwar sentiment is from people who vote Democratic.

Please don't start sounding like Benchley.

But if the elections were today. I could probably stay home. The weather is beautiful for fun things to do.

5. All polls are snap-shots in time
This poll is just an inquiry to check on my assumption that support, in terms of planned voting behavior, remains high on DU... even on what might be Obama's most unpopular day here.

7. I have been fairly critical of Obama in recent times.
I can imagine very few scenarios in which I wouldn't vote for him.

10. He drives me crazy, but of course I will vote for the Dem nominee
I mean, its not like the pugs are going to nominate Lincoln Chaffee, so I don't expect it to be a real tough call.

If Obama had a primary challenger that was running ahead of him that would be different... it would involve a calculation of the best chance for a Dem to win in November.

The odds would be that such a split party would lose the GE, but I would have to act based on the greatest likelihood of Dem victory.

For instance, if Kennedy was actually positioned to beat Carter in 1980 I might have supported Kennedy to get it over with and have him in the strongest position. But since it was obvious Kennedy wasn't going to win I supported Carter to minimize the schism.

12. I understand.
I am willing to wait and see if things get better before making a decision but I am glad elections are not today. In a presidential primary I would look into other candidates before voting for Obama.

6. I'm hugely interested in a primary challenge.....
and my dissatifaction extends well beyond ( although it certainly includes) Afghanistan.

Specifically.... to Iraq, Obama's promotion of the 'school corruption movement' (i.e. privatization), studied, not-so-benign neglect of GLBTs, corporate bailouts, non-support of local DEM candidates in NYC and elsewhere ( Doesn't he know which party he's titular head of?)and... I could go on but why bother.

If he's a DEM, so is Lieberman, seems to me.

Consequently, I may not be. But last time I checked I was still registerd as such. Hence a McCarthy-style challenge looks good to me right about now.

15. That's because there's not an option to vote for a true liberal democrat, Dennis Kucinich.
Many of us will not be voting Third Party. To the contrary, we'll be voting for the genuine article, i.e., a liberal democrat.

17. Yes, 14% disaffection on the internet on his most problematic day on DU is pretty solid
As I expected.

The claims that DU is somehow against Obama are off-base. Most complainers (including me) plan to work for his re-election.

18. Who are the frickin' unrecc'rs here?
Is it people who don't want other people to see Obama doing well in the poll?

Is it people who think any result under 100% must be suppressed?

And who un-recommends a vanilla POLL anyway?

Craziness.

19. If the election were held tomorrow
I would vote for Obama. There's just no conceivable Republican candidate that I'd want anywhere near the White House. But I can't say at this point how I will vote in 2012, except that I definitely won't vote Republican.

time and treasure to the campaign. If any elected Ds in my state or district support a primary opponent, I'll withhold my financial support from their campaigns.

However, that is still a long ways away. I'd like to see him get some more things done. It's going to be a tough road ahead.
