This isn't good because that's the number everybody is going to focus on how the fuck can jobs be created at a higher rate than expected and the unemployment rate goes up instead of going down.

1. To be unemployed, you have to be looking, more people are now looking.

2. More long-term people who stopped looking are back in the job pool looking for work.

In a way, it can be seen as a good sign. Not that I'd put that out as a press release or anything.

3. It's because more people who had "given up looking" have
returned to looking because the economic picture has improved.

5. Simple math...
Big business is outsourcing more jobs than Obama is creating.

8. No. People who had quit looking for work relaunch job searches as
the job market improves. This usually happend for 2-4 months at the end of each period of sustained high unemployment before the number of entrants to market and retirees begin to balance out again.

11. Of course, you're correct...
I'm talking politics and big picture. This has been happening since Reagan. "Simple math" sometimes is just simply simple.

9. Actually what it means as Krugman explained earlier today is that people who had given
up looking now believe the climate is better and are now actively looking.

13. Most likely, the job creation gave people greater hope, drawing more back into the job market.
So unemployment rates went up as more began looking for work than there were jobs created.

21. I think his point is that the ignorant masses, who just scan headlines, will be confused..
and most will see it as "bad" if the unemployment rate keeps going up.. regardless of the reason.

16. Discouraged workers are starting to look for work again.
They're not counted in the stats if they haven't been actively looking for work in a while.

Now that the economy's starting to pick up, some of those that had previously given up looking for work altogether are now looking again.

18. Total unemployment's still high...
but 290,000 jobs were created, so apparently, some people are starting to get work again.

Usually, the total unemployment rate remains high, even though jobs are being created and people are starting to work again, because of discouraged workers coming back into the job market.

Here's hoping the gains in employment are a long term trend. If the jobs created keeps going up, before long, the U3 and U6 rates will start going down, and people actually will be finding work again.

19. The"WorkPays" program
Edited on Fri May-07-10 05:06 PM by Madam Mossfern
This is stimulus money to pay potential employers to hire new people for six months. Non-profits get $120%.

My concern is that the program will cause an artificial bubble in employment and that many potential employers will find a reason for dismissing the new employee once the money runs out.

20. Meh, it a mixed bag since until that numbers goes down, I don't think the dems will get credit.
The job numbers last month were excellent. If we get that until the election then I think overall unemployment will go down enough for people to start appreciating dems.
