What have you done for me Lately?
Edited on Sat May-08-10 01:30 AM by FrenchieCat
Business Week, has published an article attempting to turn off Young people from our President, by announcing that young people should feel discouraged and that many *might* just not turn out to vote, because of the lack of jobs.....as though Pres. Obama is supposed to simply pull jobs out of his ass in 15 months time for anyone who wants one. :eyes:

Here's the article: http://www.businessweek.com/magazine/content/10_20/b4178028160412.htm

So I started thinking, what exactly did then Candidate Obama promise the youth, i.e., students when he spoke on those many college campuses throughout the campaigns?

Cause I'm starting to believe that every and all groups that supported Obama in his election bid are currently under propaganda assault by our corporate media in an attempt to turn them off. I know that the media has been trying hard to get the Black Community to turn their backs on Pres. Obama. And now, it appears that the youth are the next target.

So although in 15 months time, this President hasn't done everything he promised he'd do in his first term in office while President (which last I checked was 4 years, not 15 months), I think if young people were to ask themselves, what has he done for me lately? they might be pleasantly surprised that President Obama has actually done quite a bit of what he "promised" to them, already to date, and has done more than any President since well, I'm not even sure who.

He has.....
Changed the amount of pell Grants, reformed Student Loans and how much interest will be charged, and the repayment terms, protected Student credit from predatory bank sharks, provided health insurance coverage by way of allowing young people to stay on their parents insurance, and changed the tax code to allow for much bigger tax credit for tuitions paid....yes, as much as $4,000 per year tax credit for 4 years. In addition, stimulus money has gone to Community college to keep fees low, and to many universities in the way of research grants allowing many more folks to be accepted into graduate schools all over the United States. He has turned his head on the issue of Medical Marijuana as well as stood down on the Drug War, and he has provided avenues for those who are interested in Community Service.

Certainly, Pres. OBama hasn't pulled a job out of his ass for everyone,
nor has he made college free!

Obama Plans New Rules as For-Profit Colleges Mobilize (Update2)
May 04, 2010, 4:06 PM EDT

May 4 (Bloomberg) -- The Obama Administration is gearing up to produce tougher regulations that may reduce the amount of federal financial aid flowing to for-profit colleges, cutting the companies’ annual revenue growth by as much as a third.

snip

The proposed rules may disqualify for-profits from receiving federal financial aid if their graduates must spend more than 8 percent of their starting salaries on repaying student loans. The regulations may slow or even halt tuition increases at ITT, Education Management Corp., Lincoln Educational Services, Universal Technical Institute, and Career Education because many graduates take low-paying jobs in criminal justice, cooking and medical office work, Trace Urdan, an analyst at Signal Hill Capital Group in San Francisco, said in an interview.

Pricing Power

Education companies have increased revenue by as much as 15 percent and enrollment by 8 to 10 percent on an annual basis, while raising tuition about 4 to 6 percent a year, Urdan said. The new rules may slow their revenue growth by one third by limiting their ability to raise tuition.

“The days of 4 to 6 percent annual tuition price increases are over,” Urdan said. “The new proposed rules will bring some school’s power to increase prices down to zero.”

Nonprofit Policy Trends under President Obama

The Social Innovation Fund: The Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS) will run the Fund through private regrantmaking institutions, largely foundations, to find and bankroll innovative nonprofits worthy of replication and expansion.

The Strengthening Communities Fund: A creation of the stimulus, SCF replaces the Bush era Compassion Capital Fund by funneling resources through regional and national intermediaries to build the capacities of poverty-fighting and job creation organizations.

NeighborWorks: Although the Neighborhood Reinvestment Corporation dba/NeighborWorks has existed for some decades, the Obama Administration has continued the practice of the last congress of allowing NW to administer a large part of the nation’s foreclosure counseling assistance in response to the subprime (and now conventional) mortgage foreclosure crisis.

Living Cities: The Obama Administration has actually increased support to community development corporations through the Local Initiatives Support Corporation, Enterprise Community Partners, and Habitat for Humanity through Living Cities, the new name of the National Community Development Initiative.

Youthbuild: Working with a network of affiliate organizations and others that follow its model, Youthbuild provides comprehensive implementation technical assistance to a wide range of groups providing construction job training to young people with support from the Department of Labor.

1. Of course, this doesn't include a host of other actions taken that benefits
the youth like insuring unemployment compensation for maximum number of weeks,
Equal pay for equal work (benefits young women),
Make work Pay tax credit (which provided tax credits for all, including the youth,
even if they worked part time or during the summer,
and is working to safeguard net neutrality,
etc., etc, etc......

2. For unemployed people, particularly with heavy debt, be it mortgage, student loans, or
both...no one needs to announce that they should feel discouraged, we already do feel that way. Obama could've, should've done more for job seekers, Main Street rather than Wall Street. He hasn't. We needed the New Deal to solve both unemployment and a crumbling infrastructure, we don't have it. He's been weak in following through with any type of realization of hope for average, middle and lower class Americans of any age. That's the truth, and no one needs to be encouraged to feel discouraged, we already do.

5. It would be even sadder still, if folks thought that sitting at home
would get more accomplished for them. Cause I don't think so.

8. So you'd rather we get an even more fucked up government....?
Edited on Sat May-08-10 03:03 AM by FrenchieCat
and that is why you are openly campaigning and advocating against what Democrats have done,
in this case for young folks?
Done, mind you, what one other party as ever done here in the US;
not one!....not greens, not libertarians, not socialists, not communists, not Republicans, not Independents......not any fucking body!

Please provide me a list of US politicians of any stripe that has accomplished more in
a shorter time in modern times.

See, I've got your number. You find it easy to encourage folks to be pissed,
just cause they can!
Thank goodness you are in the minority! Cause your attitude won't and hasn't gotten get us shit,
and would only get us shit!

Might as well just ask foks to move to another country while you are at it.

9. I'd say that's quite a list of accomplishments for 15 mos. in office.
And you're right, the youth are being targeted heavily. I can see why, because these were some of his biggest allies. The bigger disappointment for me is that groups on the left are doing the same thing. It's almost as if they're trying to suppress enthusiasm, and I can't quite figure out why.

If the president fails, then the country fails as well. So it just makes no sense to me.

11. Some people have nothing to lose except their cynicism,
Edited on Sat May-08-10 03:29 AM by FrenchieCat
and they will be holding on to that with all of their might.

They enjoy being negative on everything, no matter what it is....
as there is comfort and solace in believing that since everything is shit for them,
so it should be for everyone else.
