Two sides of Michelle Obama: Savvy campaigner and down-home Everywoman
Two sides of Michelle Obama: Savvy campaigner and down-home Everywoman

By Philip Rucker
Washington Post Staff Writer
Saturday, May 8, 2010

First lady Michelle Obama was in rare campaign form on Wednesday, delivering a political speech at a Democratic National Committee luncheon, before returning to the White House to celebrate Mother's Day with scores of women and girls nibbling on cucumber sandwiches and fruit tartlettes.

The day captured the dual worlds of being first lady, with her assets as an outspoken motivator and as a down-home Everymom each on display.

At midday, Obama embarked on a mission to use her broad appeal for a partisan cause. She stepped onto a stage at a hotel ballroom to rouse some 500 Democratic activists at the DNC's Women's Leadership Forum Conference to help the party win in November's midterm elections.

"We desperately need all of you to stay involved in this work," Obama said, with a no-nonsense voter-turnout message. "You cannot stop -- because we all know that when you need something done, and you ask women to do it, it gets done. End of story."

Obama continued her drive through bursts of laughter and clapping: "And in the months leading up to this November and beyond, we're going to need you to get out there and get it done, because we know that change -- we do know that change doesn't happen overnight. . . . It takes folks like you, folks who are constantly rejecting the cynicism, casting aside the doubts and working day after day to continue what we've already started."

USA today poll over who would you rather be your mother? I mean seriously there is just no acounting for taste. It is close and may change but it still has me shaking my head that it should even be close. I think Michelle Obama is doing a great job in her role as First Lady and her Mother's day Tea and remarks were funny and touching.

6. I wish I were kidding. It is a silly poll and there may be a few obsessed Palin fans
Using a voting machine or it may be legit in either case it had me going WTH. I am just going to try to think about Michelle hopefully serving 2 terms as first lady and Sarah Palin never getting into the White House to pull me through.

5. Yeah, who did they poll? If palin is
even in the running that says everything about the corporate jerkoff poll and nothing about Michelle Obama.

7. USA Today is doing the poll after they had cover articles with both
Sarah Palin and Michelle. I really hate that they felt the need to do the poll in the first place. In any case. I am sure Michelle won't lose any sleep over it but still I hate for the MSM to have any further excuse to give Sarah Palin more publicity. She is like a bad rash that won't go away.

8. I like her more than I ever thought I would. She is fantastic as Barack's barometer.
I have never seen anyone quite like her ever before.
She's even more complex to figure out than President Obama is.
I think that Barack may be a genius.

I know that Michelle is a genius!
She is so freaking out-of-this-world, totally cool that it is hard to wrap my mind around.
And, on top of all of that, she is also a mother.

Happy Mother's day to her and all the mothers out there.
Without mothers, we would not be here.
Without mothers, we would never aspire to be great.

You just know that Barack and Michelle were raised by great mothers.
And now Michelle's mother is there with them.

We are truly blessed that they moved into the White House together.
