While we obsess about the race and gender of the Supreme Court, I'd like to offer another suggestion |

Wouldn't a person's EXPERIENCES be more important than that they look different? How about a person with AIDS? Or a single mother? Or a former orphan? Even further, if we want to focus on diversity on Congress, why not bring these same standards over there?
Why the obsession with race and gender all the time? As a black gay male, I don't feel like someone relates to me because their skin ended up the same shade in the sun. I do however care that they came from a broken home like me, or have AIDS (like friends I've known), or have experienced the challenges of being a single mother (like many of my coworkers). If we're looking for SC justices who will have empathy with the people whose lives they are affecting, why do we only focus on race and gender? With apologies to Jesse Jackson, I for one think there's a hell of a lot more that defines your life than your race/sex. Thoughts?

1. Until Thurgood Marshall was appointed, white male defined the court. |

And before O'Connor, it was No Girls Allowed. I think gender and ethnic diversity is important. I'm not merely concerned with that, but other matters like those you mentioned to not prevent us from considering race and gender.

2. I am more fascinated with Kagan not being a former Judge then anything else. |

Haven't had one of those in quite a long time.
