Michael Steele defends the 3/5 Compromise...

I always feel a little bad for Michael Steele since his job requires quite a lot of him. Now he's slamming Elena Kagan for praising Thurgood Marshall when he said that the original constitution was 'defective' because of its embrace of slavery.

Really? Can't we agree the whole constitutional embrace of slavery was a bit of a problem?

1. I can make the case that the Constitutional protection of slavery made...
...the civil war inevitable.

And I think the document is still flawed.

5. Of course it's still flawed
Perfection is unachievable.

The fact that the constitution always has been and always will be flawed is the entire reason Article V exists.

6. Far, far too many Americans practically worship the Constitution...
...because they've been told the Constitution is the source of their rights. Which misconception is a major part of the problem. Now, since the document is so revered, there is a great reluctance to adapt it to our times, and I think that's a foolish mindset.

Yes, I made an obvious point. Feel free to call me Captain Obvious, or some such; I ought to be an Admiral by now but anyway. I point out the obvious all the time, for it's all pretty obvious to me. I think the obvious sometimes needs pointing out, because even though it is obvious, too few people can see it.

Of course it is flawed. All human government will always be flawed. To borrow a phrase from the President, what we need to do is work to "perfect the union." I am for rewriting the whole damn thing, actually. Too many amendments to make, IMHO.

In honor of the Original Constitution, I'm only going to listen to 3/5ths of what Mr. Steele has to say. Wait, he's not Free. He belongs to the GOP. I'm not going to listen to him at all.

As the lawyers say, I wasn't going to go there, but Mr Steele made it relevant.

Mr Steele needs to tell us if he thinks a consitution which enshires the 3/5ths status of Black men is without defect. For that matter, ANYONE who claims the constitution was not defective needs to answer that questions.

Beat me to it. Only an idiot would claim that the Constitution is flawless. Thankfully Steele as the face of the modern GOP is an idiot.

Onward and upward Michael. You are 3/5ths of the way to greatness.

4. The 3/5ths compromise
made sure that the slave states kept power. If the slaves had been counted as zero, the North would have had more votes in the Electoral College. As it was, the Presidency went to someone from a slave state for 32 of the first 36 years, with only John Adams as the lone Northerner in that timeline.

Having Congressional representation based on a population that couldn't vote gave the South an unfair advantage.

9. Justice Marshall would roll over in his grave laughing
to know that a fool like Michael Steele is the head of the Republican Party.

My family is from Baltimore, his hometown.
Our house was about 4 blocks from the Marshall's.

My great aunt was a dear friend of his ~
She alway told me that he loved to play practical jokes on all their classmates.

10. Should he get just 3/5ths of his salary?
My guess is that he would object to that.

11. While we get outraged and have fun at his expense, let's remember to keep it down to a certain level
we dont want the Repugs getting rid of him. He's the gift that keeps on giving.

Don't kill the golden goose!!!
