Edited on Tue May-11-10 12:11 PM by jenmito
51% approval, 42% disapproval! I'd never know it by reading DU! http://www.gallup.com/Home.aspx

Obama cannot be popular if people like Greenwald, Hamsher, and Uygur don't like him.

7. There's a battle being fought on the left, but not the one most people think of. |
|
There's a battle being fought between various bloggers to be the reigning "Liberaller than Thou" blogger pronouncing every Obama move a failure from on high.
That's the REAL battle being fought on the left. It's all about personality, face time on television, and money from ad revenues by driving traffic to certain web sites.

9. Ain't that the truth?! |
|
And, of course, they DO get the most face time on TV. It's rare that I see Dems. sticking up for Obama on TV-just extreme LWers vs. extreme RWers-and none defend Obama's positions.

very good news.It IS funny how the right wing and MSM try to make him sound like some great radical and yet many left sites say he Is not Liberal enough which of course the MSM will not advertse.
Most of his approval comes from Democrats.Only 47 percent of Independents approve. There Is a small number of Republicans who approve. These are non Teabaggers and non right wing Republicans obvisously.
Obama's base Is Americans 18-49.The true anti Obama element are those 65 and older while Americans 50-64 are In between at least according to Gallup.

just so/so with him. I love my parents but I don't get that generation at all. Not all of them, of course. Many liberal baby boomers here on DU. But many of the older whites dislike Obama immensely.

all the time, especially when they went dancing. They're 71 and 73 and semi-famous-at least in FL. :)

Strong presidents do what is right because it is the right thing to do. Weak presidents govern in a haphazard way in reaction to ever shifting polls. The situation in the US right now calls for the right decisions to be made, polls be damned.

14. All presidents do that |
|
All presidents try to keep their numbers high to insure Congress goes along with their agenda. No president can be strong without a congress willing to pass their agenda.

18. That is a bogus argument |
|
Great presidents achieve their stature by confronting historic turning points and choosing the right course regardless of personal or political consequences, as we have seen time and time again throughout our history.
What if Obama had used poll numbers to guide his response when the economy collapsed? He would have taken the timid middle/right and we would all be standing in soup lines or selling apples on the street corners - and his polls would be sitting at 30%.

20. I agree with the thrust of your argument here. |
|
However, it's important to note that the single most important resource any president can draw from is his own personal approval among the public. Only with a heavy stock of approval does he stand the best chance of accomplishing his goals, however "worthy" they really are.

16. When was Obama crowned? I missed that. So you're suggesting that |
|
the president can write, pass, and sign his own legislation into law? No need for Congress and that other pesky branch of government? Wow, these next few years should be a breeze then.:eyes:

26. You contend that numbers don't matter. But they do matter to Congress. |
|
A president with 30% approval is much less likely to persuade the people who actually write & pass legislation, than one who enjoys higher numbers.
Anyway, I'm not overly concerned with numbers, but like Clinton, Pres. Obama needs to gauge the mood of the country, and do what HE feels is right. When you said the Pres. should just do what's right, you left out the rest of the equation. He can stomp his feet and throw hissyfits, until he's blue in the face, but without the cooperation of Congress, it's all for naught.
