Obama says he's 'ultimately accountable' for civilian deaths in Afghanistan

May 12, 2010

ASSOCIATED PRESS

WASHINGTON -- President Barack Obama says he is "ultimately accountable" for civilian deaths on the Afghanistan battlefield.

Speaking at a White House news conference with Afghan President Hamid Karzai (HAH'-mihd KAR'-zeye), Obama said civilian deaths are "something that I have to carry with me" and that it is not something he takes lightly.

He said the U.S. is doing everything possible to prevent the killing of Afghan civilians.

Obama said the overwhelming majority of civilian casualties in Afghanistan are caused by terrorist acts by the Taliban. Some suspected terrorists have cited civilian deaths as justification for their actions.

I do wonder how politicians sleep at night.

it's easy to say them, then go home, enjoy a nice meal with your family, watch some tube or do whatever, then turn out the lights and fall asleep.

5. I think they place their souls on deposit in exchange for the power.
Anyone who can order attacks that kill children and other innocents and then joke about it to an audience of celebrities and media hacks... well, let's just say I will never be able to understand how they can sleep either.

6. "Ultimately accountable"
Like the previous administration?

The concept of accountability is applied to the rest of us, not to those in the upper reaches of government, Wall St. or any other X-industrial complex. The government essentially turned a blind eye to war crimes and bailed out those responsible (begun under Pres. Oblivious Maximus to be fair) for the biggest economic implosion in 7 decades.

Not holding my breath.

7. Very interesting when compared to W who didn't feel remotely accountable
for anything.

I think Obama is seriously trying to find a good outcome to the Afghanistan war, but it was such a neglected mess for so long it is very difficult to do so and find any type of meaning it any of it.
