I don't.

Would anyone even make an argument that such a person was a moderate? I wouldn't.

5. i think the point is that when it comes to gay marriage though
if someone opposes it, they are still considered moderate

if you call someone a bigot for being against gay marriage, du'ers will start jumping up and down to defend them from this awful accusation

obama for instance is a bigot. as is most of the democratic party leadership. less bigoted than the republical party, but bigoted none the less.

7. Bigoted yes. Unusual that many "moderates" still are not for it, no.
Interracial marriage was not accepted by an actual majority until...1991! There are a lot of Dems that are for civil unions and not for gay marriage. It is a half-assed approach. I used to think civil unions were fine and there was no need for gays to have a full right to marriage, that was in 2004. I am glad that in being at DU for the last few years, I have had my mind changed. Totally changed.

This is the number Gallup had for Dems the last time they did a poll on it in 2009 (http://www.gallup.com/poll/118378/majority-americans-continue-oppose-gay-marriage.aspx) :

Just a slim majority (55%) of Democrats approve of gay marriage, but they are more likely to do so than independents (45%) and Republicans (20%).

And by political idealogy:

By age was the saddest, just 18 to 29 year olds had approval though I am in my early 30's and would say the 30 to 35 year olds probably have a better approval then the rest of all adults. Over 50's, forget it. Approval is very low.

I think the thing is, legislation just has to go around public opinion.

19. I like that trend line. Anti-gays will eventually croak in large enough #s
and gay marriage will be the law of the land. Suck on it, old bigots!

10. Some history:

As recent as 1967 it was *law* in much of the Democratic (at the time) south.

15. I think younger people simply aren't aware of how recently anti-miscegenation laws were accepted...
... and not just in Dixieland. A colleague of mine only a few years older than myself was born when her parents' marriage was illegal in California; her father was Filipino and her mother was Irish-American. The ban on Asian/white marriages was lifted in 1948.

Eventually the struggle for gay marriage will also fall into history and kids now in kindergarten will come on this board and wonder what the fuss was all about.

20. "Recent" is often relative to lifespan and experience.
An 18-year old voter likely doesn't even remember life before the internet.

22. My 97 year-old grandfather helps me keep things in perspective.
I've heard many stories of life without radio, television, refrigeration (they had ice-boxes), family cars, etc.

Kind of makes me wonder about life 30 years from now, and what they'll be arguing about:
Is it okay to marry your clone?
Is instant genetic testing a bad thing to ask for on a first date?
Should a 130-year lifespan be considered a public right, or a privilege?

13. I think you'd be surprised when it comes down to finding out
Racism of that type is hard to get rid of. Even when it is accepted on a theoretical basis, acceptance of interracial marriage on a personal level is another step in progressiveness.

14. I've known African-Americans who sure were against interracial marriage.
I put my foot in it once or twice before learning to keep my positive opinions to myself.

17. Yes. There are some self identified progressives who are racists
They are not progressives, but they like to call themselves that on message boards.
